  • Ofer Sabath Beit-Halachmi, a Reform rabbi at his home in Tzur Hadassah 15 minutes southwest of Jerusalem, Israel. (Ofer Sabath Beit-Halachmi is featured in the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) The caloric value of his typical day's worth of food in the month of October was 3100 Kcals. He is 43 years of age; 6 feet, 1 inch tall and 165 pounds. Ofer's town, located in the Judean Hills, is a communal settlement where residents lease land and houses from the state of Israel for a 99-year period. On Friday evenings Ofer leads the Shabbat service in a small portable building that is kindergarten by day and synagogue at night and on weekends. MODEL RELEASED.

  • Jill McTighe, a mother and school aide, sits on a couch at her home in Willesden, London, United Kingdom. (Jill McTighe is featured in the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.)  The caloric value of her day's worth of food on a "bingeing" day in the month of September was 12300 kcals. The calorie total is not a daily caloric average.  Jill is 31 years old; 5 feet, 5 inches tall;  and 230 pounds. Honest about her food addiction replacing a drug habit, Jill joked about being a chocoholic as she enthusiastically downed a piece of chocolate cake at the end of the photo session. Her weight has yo-yoed over the years and at the time of the picture she was near her heaviest; walking her children to school every day was the sole reason she didn't weigh more. She says this photo experience was a catalyst for beginning a healthier diet for herself and her family.  MODEL RELEASED.   • Huang Neng, a welder from Henan Province sits in Pudong's Lujiazui Central Green Park in Shanghai, China. (Huang Neng is featured in the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets). The caloric value of his day's worth of food on a typical day in June was 4300 kcals. He is 36 years of age; 5 feet, 6 inches tall; and 136 pounds. The migrant welder has worked on a dozen trophy skyscrapers on the Huangpu River in Pudong New Area, across the river from old Shanghai. His current project is the Zhongrong Jasper Tower, which will top out at 48 floors, a short-statured building compared to its neighbors. MODEL RELEASED.

  • Ansis Sauka, a voice teacher, musician, and composer in Riga, Latvia. (Ansis Sauka is featured in the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) Riga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the oldest continuously running market in Europe, is known throughout Europe for its choral traditions. It proudly hosts the nationwide Latvian Song and Dance Festival every five years. In 2008 more than 38,000 singers, dancers, and musicians participated in the weeklong event. MODEL RELEASED.

  • Burton Richter (born 1931), American physicist and director of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) since 1984. Richter has drawn the letter Z with his torch light, representing the Z-zero particle, one of the mediators of the weak nuclear force. In the 1960s, Richter worked on the Stanford electron storage rings, the first accelerator to collide subatomic particles together. In 1970-72, he directed the building of the SPEAR electron- positron Collider at SLAC, which yielded his discovery of the J/psi particle in 1974. For this work, Richter shared the 1976 Nobel prize in physics with Sam Ting, whose team at Brookhaven had also found the same particle. MODEL RELEASED [1986].

  • Physics: British theoretical physicist Professor Peter Higgs in his University office in Edinburgh, Scotland (b. 1929). In 1964, Higgs predicted the existence of a new type of fundamental particle, commonly called the Higgs boson. This particle is required by many of the current Grand Unified Theories (or GUTs), which hope to explain three of the fundamental forces (electromagnetism, the weak & the strong nuclear forces) in a single unified theory. The Higgs boson is yet to be detected experimentally, but it is one of the main challenges of high-energy particle accelerators now being built.   • Physics: Scientist checking the sense wires of the muon detector inside the clean room of CERN's L-3 experiment during construction in [1988] The detector consists of 250, 000 beryllium and tungsten wires mounted in 80 chambers. A pair of positive and negative muons may be produced by the collision of an electron and a positron, the wires detect the muons and measure their momentum. The L-3 experiment is part of CERN's Large Electron- Positron Collider (LEP), inaugurated on 13 November 1989. [1988].

  • To study the flight control behavior of fruit flies, a tiny fly is glued to a probe positioned in an electronic arena of hundreds of flashing LEDs that can also measure its wing motion and flight forces. By altering its wing motion, the fly itself can change the display of the moving electronic panorama, tricking the fly into "thinking" it is really flying through the air. The amplified humming of the fruit fly as it buzzes through its imaginary flight surrounded by computers in the darkened lab is quite bizarre. UC Berkeley, CA, USA.

WABIAN sways from side to side as it walks, but its builders are not discouraged by its imperfections: walking in a straight line, which humans can do without thinking, in fact requires coordinated movements of such fantastic complexity that researchers are pleased if their creations can walk at all. Indeed, researchers built the robot partly to help themselves understand the physics of locomotion. It took decades of work to bring WABIAN to its present state: its first ancestor was built in 1972.   • Colombo, Sri Lanka. Sir Arthur C. Clarke sits in his wheelchair (he has post-polio syndrome) at the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka, upon a checkerboard-patterned area facing the sea. Clarke wrote 3001 while living in this hotel. He wrote 2001 while living in the Chelsea Hotel in New York City. When asked about Hal and Hal's legacy (artificial intelligence), Clarke said that Hal was possible but asked if that was a good idea. He said that he believed intelligent machines will come, but then there is the question of consciousness. "I think, therefore I am, I think," he said. The photograph Illustrates this quote.   • The robot, called Kenta, (Ken means tendon in Japanese) has a flexible spinal column that resembles that of the human body; 96 motors; a five-joint neck; a10 joint spine (each with 3 degrees of freedom); and fast-moving stereo vision that can track a flesh color object. The neck and torso are coordinated to respond in concert with the eye's movement. Student researchers create movements for the robot in simulation and then feed the simulations back to the robot. Professor Hirochika Inoue thinks that developing robots with this structure of incredibly decreased weight and fewer parts will reduce the cost and the complexity of robots in the future for more widespread application.   • Sitting on a mobile motorized cushion he calls a "vuton," Shigeo Hirose of the Tokyo Institute of Technology surrounds himself with some of the robots he has built in the last two decades. Beside him is the snake-bot ACM R-1, one of his earliest projects. It is made of modules, any number of which can be hooked together to produce a mechanical snake that slowly, jerkily undulates down its path. Hirose, who is primarily funded by industry, hopes to develop commercially useful robots; the snake, he thinks, could be useful for inspecting underground pipes. Japan. Biosphere 2 Project founder John Allen with map of the planet Mars. Allen is pointing to what he thinks is a probable landing/colony site on the Mars map. Biosphere 2 was a privately funded experiment, designed to investigate the way in which humans interact with a small self-sufficient ecological environment, and to look at possibilities for future planetary colonization. The $30 million Biosphere covers 2.5 acres near Tucson, Arizona, and was entirely self- contained. The eight ‘Biospherian’s’ shared their air- and water-tight world with 3,800 species of plant and animal life. The project had problems with oxygen levels and food supply, and has been criticized over its scientific validity. 1990

  • When a terrifying earthquake leveled part of Turkey in the fall of 1999, rescuers had trouble pulling victims from the rubble because it was too risky to crawl through the unstable ruins. As a result, some people died before they could be rescued. Shigeo Hirose of the Tokyo Technical Institute thinks he may have the solution: Blue Dragon (Souryu in Japanese). A light, triple-jointed robot with a digital camera in its nose, Blue Dragon could crawl through an earthquake-damaged building in search of survivors. Wriggling over a pile of shattered concrete on a construction site at the institute's campus, the battery-operated robot fell over several times, but righted itself quickly and continued slithering through the pile of stone. He also thinks humankind may come to rue the day it created them. De Garis was working at a research facility 30 miles outside of Kyoto, Japan.
