  • Virtual Reality: Henry Fuchs, University of North Carolina. Henry Fuchs is a pioneer in the development of virtual reality. He has worked with 3D biomedical imaging and graphics since 1969 and with head-mounted displays since 1970. He has been on the faculty of the Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 1978. At present, he is predominantly involved in the field of virtual reality in medicine through his work in ultrasound-guided, head-mounted displays, and in telecollaboration as part of the National Tele- immersion Initiative. Merritt says that Icarian is managed so as to be a fun place to work. This is exemplified by the company-wide Friday afternoon in-line-skate hockey competitions that are held in the parking lot. Usually they drink beer from the company keg in the company lunchroom after the game but since this was the beginning of the Fourth of July weekend, everyone went home after the game at 6 PM. (1999).

  • Wadis in the central part of Chad are dry nine months of the year. During that time, villagers must dig down to the water, shoring up the wells with millet stalks to keep them from collapsing. In the morning, the wadis are furiously active. One after another, teams of two or three girls fill the pools as wave after wave of animals come to drink. It's hard work: the water rapidly evaporates, sinks into the sand, and vanishes down the animals, and the girls have to keep refilling the pools. Hungry Planet: What the World Eats (p. 71).

The son of a baker, Zareh began working full-time at age 10 and regrets that he didn't attend school and learn how to read and write. Gutierrez works on the platform for seven days then is off at home for seven days.   While on the platform he runs on its helipad, practices karate, lifts weights, and jumps rope to keep fit. His food for the seven days comes from the platform cafeteria which, though plagued with cockroaches, turns out food choices that run from healthful to greasy-fried. Fresh squeezed orange juice is on the menu as well and Gutierrez drinks three liters of it a day himself. His diet changed about ten years ago when he decided that he'd rather be more fit than fat like many of his platform colleagues. PDVSA is the state oil company of Venezuela.

His travel adventures have included crossing the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan, where he spent time with a blind hermit and dined with a Mongol woman who hunted bears and treated him to groundhog soup. The heavy clay soils along the river near the market town of Sonargaon are well suited for making bricks. At the JRB brick factory, workers of all ages move raw bricks from long, stacked rows, where they first dry in the sun, to the smoky coal-fired kilns. After being fired, the bricks turn red. A foreman keeps tally, handing the workers colored plastic tokens corresponding to the number of bricks they carry past him. They cash in the chips at the end of each shift, taking home the equivalent of $2 to $4 (USD) a day.

He sells extra milk to a nearby school for a government feeding program and gives some to his mother who makes yogurt and sells it. His staple food is ugali, a maize meal porridge. He milks, feeds, waters and cares for the cows twice a day with the help of the wives of his brothers who also live on the property in their own houses.

She and her tenants share a companionable outdoor cooking space and all largely cook traditional Bangladeshi foods such as dahl, ruti (also spelled roti), and vegetable curries.
