Many of the components scattered over his desk are simple, cheap, and (by contemporary standards) primitive; many are ripped from junked tape decks, cameras, and VCRs.   • Physics: Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). Electronics Trailer. J. Chapman checks myriad connections..Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) experiment, Menlo Park, California. With a length of 3km, the Stanford Linear Accelerator is the largest of its kind in the world. The accelerator is used to produce streams of electrons and positrons, which collide at a combined energy of 100 GeV (Giga electron Volts). This massive energy is sufficient to produce Z-zero particles in the collision. The Z-zero is one of the mediators of the weak nuclear force, the force behind radioactive decay, and was first discovered at CERN, Geneva, in 1983.   • Burton Richter (b.1931), Director of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), photographed during the construction of the Stanford Linear Collider in 1986. Richter won the 1976 Nobel Prize for Physics, following his discovery of the Psi- particle at the SLAC in 1974. The Prize was shared with Sam Ting of Brookhaven National Laboratory.   • Virtual reality: Rich Holloway wears prototype headset which employs half-silvered mirrors to enable the user to view a projected image of a virtual environment (and thus exist in virtual reality) and also see in front of his nose. A virtual environment is one created by a computer. A person entering such an environment does so with the aid of such a headset, which displays virtual imagery. Tactile interaction with the environment may be made using a data glove, a Spandex garment wired with sensors, which relays movement of the hand & fingers to the virtual environment. (1991).Lightning occurs when a large electrical charge builds up in a cloud, probably due to the friction of water and ice particles. The charge induces an opposite charge on the ground, and a few leader electrons travel to the ground. When one makes contact, there is a huge backflow of energy up the path of the electron. This produces a bright flash of light, and temperatures of up to 30,000 degrees Celsius.

  • Aisa Bou Yabes, head of the Kuwait Oil Company firefighting team dispatched to southern Iraq inspects damage to oil well heads in Iraq's Rumaila field. He is holding a wire used by retreating Iraqi troops to detonate explosives and set this oil well on fire in the southern Iraq Rumaila oil field. The wells were set on fire when the US and UK invasion began. Seven or 8 wells were set ablaze but at least one other was detonated but did not ignite. The Rumaila field is one of Iraq's biggest with five billion barrels in reserve. Rumaila is also spelled Rumeilah.

  • Lightning research. Scientists prepare a rocket designed to fly into a thunderstorm and trigger a bolt of lightning. The rocket trails a fine copper wire, providing an easy path for the lightning to reach Earth. This allows the scientists to measure the current, voltage and other parameters of the lightning bolts.   • Lightning research. Scientists prepare a rocket designed to fly into a thunderstorm and trigger a bolt of lightning. The rocket trails a fine copper wire, providing an easy path for the lightning to reach Earth. This allows the scientists to measure the current, voltage and other parameters of the lightning bolts.   • Boston Museum of Science electrostatic display operator, Don Salvatore, demonstrates the safety of a Faraday cage as he is protected from a 2.5-million-volt Van de Graaff static electricity generator. A Faraday cage is an earthed screen made of metal wire that surrounds an electric device in order to shield it from external electrical fields. Artificial lightning passes through the metal frame.   • Physics: Scientist checking the sense wires of the muon detector inside the clean room of CERN's L-3 experiment during construction in [1988] The detector consists of 250, 000 beryllium and tungsten wires mounted in 80 chambers. A pair of positive and negative muons may be produced by the collision of an electron and a positron, the wires detect the muons and measure their momentum.   • Researchers adjust the mechanism of WE-3RIII, Waseda University's head robot, after it accidentally whiplashed into its own wires. In a situation all too familiar to robotics researchers, Atsuo Takanishi ( hand on right) is trying to make his creation work. His research team's robot, WE-3RIII (Waseda Eye Number 3 Refined Version III) can follow a light with its digital-camera eyes, moving its head if needed. In the laboratory the robot worked perfectly, its movements almost disconcertingly lifelike. But while being installed at a robot exhibit in Tokyo, WE-3RIII inexplicably and violently threw back its head, tearing apart its own wiring. Now Takanishi and one of his students (hand on left) are puzzling over the problem and will solve it only in the early hours of the morning before the exhibit opened. Japan. In 1986 the USSR Academy of Sciences allowed the NRDC to install seismic monitoring instruments within a few hundred kilometers of their nuclear test site to verify that the USSR was not testing nuclear weapons underground during the nuclear test ban.   • In a Kafkaesque scenario, an anesthetized female cockroach is pinned on its back in a petri dish coated with a rubbery goo. Guiding himself by peering through a microscope, James T. Watson, a staff researcher in Roy Ritzmann's lab at Case Western Reserve University, inserts the wires from thin pink electrodes into one of the insect's leg muscles.   • Designed to run freely on its own, untethered to any external wires, Troody is modeled after Troodon formosus, a carniverous dinosaur that was reputedly the most intelligent creature in the late Cretaceous era. Troody's designer, MIT Leg Lab staff researcher Peter Dilworth, wants to put such prehistoric creatures in museums. The idea has been embraced by Gregory S. Paul, a prominent paleontologist.
