Because they can run up to 40 miles per hour for short bursts, dealers hobble one leg when they are unloaded at the Birqash market, forcing them to hop around on just three legs. They are marked with painted symbols to make them easier for buyers and sellers to identify. Both brokers and camels have a reputation for being surly, and the brokers don't hesitate to flail the camels with their long sticks to maintain their dominance.

She is 28 years of age; 5 feet, 6 inches and 144 pounds. She's wearing her Bread Queen sash and crown, which she dons whenever she appears at festivals, trade shows, and educational events, representing the baker's guild of Germany's greater Cologne region. At the age of three, she started her career in her father's bakery, helping her parents with simple chores like sorting nuts. Her career plan is to return to this bakery, which has been in the family for four generations, in a few years. She will remodel the old premises slightly to allow customers the opportunity to watch the baking process, but plans to keep the old traditions of her forebears alive.   MODEL RELEASED.

Since 1962, the U.S. trade blockade has effectively prevented any new cars from arriving. But even though a few auto dealers in Europe and Russia are willing to defy the blockade and the attendant U.S. sanctions, not many Cubans have the money to buy new vehicles. Brontotherium was a genus of mammals that lived in the Lower Oligocene period about 35 million years ago in what is now North America. This photo was taken during the Fossil Fair at Tucson, Arizona, where amateur and commercial fossil collectors gather to trade in the remains of prehistoric animals. Grocery stores, supermarkets, and megamarkets all have their roots in village market areas where farmers and vendors would converge once or twice a week to sell their produce and goods. In farming communities, just about everyone had something to trade or sell. As transportation became more efficient (especially refrigerated transport), and farms became huge, big corporations moved into the food business to take advantage of scale, especially in the United States. Now the convenience of one-stop shopping has made this business even bigger. Even the smaller supermarkets are being bought up or run out of business by the larger concerns. Some small town markets still exist today throughout much of Europe, although to a lesser degree there as well. Small markets are still the lifeblood of communities in the developing world, and, for better or worse, will remain so until they are numerous and big enough to attract the conglomerates' attention. Coming full circle, farmers markets have come back into vogue in some places in the USA where they had largely disappeared.

  • Robina Weiser-Linnartz, a master baker and confectioner with her typical day's worth of food in her parent's bakery in Cologne, Germany. (From the book What I Eat; Around the World ion 80 Diets.) The caloric value of her day's worth of food in March was 3700 kcals. She is 28 years of age; 5 feet, 6 inches tall; and 144 pounds. She's wearing her Bread Queen sash and crown, which she dons whenever she appears at festivals, trade shows, and educational events, representing the baker's guild of Germany's greater Cologne region. At the age of three, she started her career in her father's bakery, helping her parents with simple chores like sorting nuts. Her career plan is to return to this bakery, which has been in the family for four generations, in a few years. She will remodel the old premises slightly to allow customers the opportunity to watch the baking process, but plans to keep the old traditions of her forebears alive. MODEL RELEASED.

  • Austin Richards of Santa Barbara, CA, is zapped by his homemade Tesla Coil. Richards wears a homemade robot outfit with a birdcage covering his head. The electrical "lightning" bolts his Tesla coil zaps him with do not do any harm because he is surrounded by metal that acts a Faraday cage, harmlessly channeling the charges to the ground and protecting his body from shocks.   • Little Man's legs and feet, created at AVG, an animatronics company founded by Alvaro Villa in Los Angeles, California. This animatronic figure wears a baseball cap and sneakers. Little Man "represents" the company at trade shows, as well as tirelessly delivers a humorous prerecorded spiel that is synchronized with a video on a screen behind it.

Located on a narrow isthmus between two bodies of water, the Turkish city of Istanbul (formerly known as Constantinople and, before that, Byzantium) long dominated the trade between Europe and Asia.   • A collection of coprolite at a fossil fair. Coprolites are the fossilized feces of prehistoric animals. As it is very rare that a sample can be accurately related to a specific genus of animal, coprolites are classified according to their own taxonomy. Particularly well-preserved examples may reveal data on the animal's diet, especially in more recent mammals such as bears and cave lions. Fossil fairs provide a forum for amateur and commercial collector to trade in prehistoric remains. Although frowned upon by many academics, amateur paleontologists have often made finds of previously unknown species. (1991)
