  • Virtual reality. Jamaea Commodore wears a virtual reality headset and data glove appears immersed in a computer-generated world. Virtual reality headsets contain two screens in front of the eyes, both displaying a computer- generated environment such as a room or landscape. The screens show subtly different perspectives to create a 3-D effect. The headset responds to movements of the head, changing the view so that the user can look around. Sensors on the data glove track the hand, allowing the user to manipulate objects in the artificial world with a virtual hand that appears in front of them. Model Released (1990)

  • Virtual reality: Jim Chong wears a prototype (1st generation) headset. Virtual environments are generated by computer systems to allow users to interact with in similar ways as they might with a real environment. The computer environments are displayed to their users using sophisticated graphics projected through small video monitors mounted on the headset. In addition, some headsets have a sensor which instructs the computer of the wearer's spatial aspect, that is, in 3-D. This particular model features displays with half-silvered mirrors that allow the user to see the computer image & look ahead. Model Released (1990)

  • Seeming to touch the objects on his screen, Peter Berkelman, then a graduate student at the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute in Pittsburgh, PA, scoops up virtual blocks with a special device that communicates the sensation of touching them. The device, which has a handle suspended in powerful magnetic fields, can move with all six possible degrees of freedom: up and down, side to side, back and forth, yaw, pitch, and roll.   • Relaxing in his office at the Mechanical Engineering Lab in Tsukuba, Japan, Takanori Shibata pats a derivative product from his research: a robot cat named Tama. Shibata is a roboticist who studied with MIT robot guru Rodney Brooks before heading his own lab. Omron, a Japanese engineering company, applied Shibata's discoveries to produce Tama, a mechanical pet with sensors beneath its fur that react to sound and touch.   • Robot designer Yoshihiro Fujita stares into the electronic eyes of R100, his personal-assistant robot. The robot can recognize faces, identify a few hundred words of Japanese, and obey simple commands, but its most important job, Fujita says, is to help families keep in touch. If Mom at work wants to remind Junior at home to study, she can E-mail the robot, which will deliver the message verbally. To take the sting out of the command, the robot can sing and dance, a charming feature that is one reason NEC is inching toward commercializing the project. Japan.   • Working behind a plastic shroud that keeps dust out, NASA engineer Art Thompson of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, works with an early mock-up of what is called Nanorover, a lunchbox-sized space vehicle that will touch down on and explore a one-kilometer-wide asteroid. The small near-Earth asteroid 4660 Nereus is the target of a Japanese space mission that will launch in 2002.   • Sweet Lips the robot guide takes visitors through the Hall of North American Wildlife, near the Dinosaur Hall in the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, PA. Carnegie Mellon University robotics professor Illah R. Nourbakhsh's creation draws children like a pied piper by speaking and playing informational videos on its screen. It navigates autonomously, using a locator system that detects colored squares mounted high on the wall. A color camera and scores of sonar, infrared, and touch sensors prevent Sweet Lips from crashing into museum displays or museum visitors.   • Looking into the eyes of Jack the robot, Gordon Cheng tests its response to the touch of his hand. Researchers at the Electrotechnical Lab at Tsukuba, an hour away from Tokyo, Japan, are part of a project funded by the Japanese Science and Technology Agency to develop a humanoid robot as a research vehicle into complex human interactions. With the nation's population rapidly aging, the Japanese government is increasingly funding efforts to create robots that will help the elderly. Project leader Yasuo Kuniyoshi wants to create robots that are friendly and quite literally soft, the machinery will be sheathed in thick padding. In contrast to a more traditional approach, Kuniyoshi wants to program his robot to make it learn by analyzing and fully exploiting its natural constraints.   • Masato Takeuchi (at left, his ring name is Miyabiyama), a sumo wrestler at the junior champion level (sekiwale)  touches an opponent who he has thrown to the ground during practice for a tournament in Nagoya, Japan. (Masato Tekeuchi is featured in the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.)  Miyabiyama is one of the largest of the Japanese sumos and would probably have moved up even further in the ranks had he not suffered a severe shoulder injury.   • Rather than building an exact metal and plastic copy of an insect's bones and muscles, Stanford engineer Mark Cutkosky and his students Sean Bailey and Jorge Cham (Cutkosky at left) stripped a cockroach to its essence. The Mini-sprawl has padded feet, with springy couplings and pneumatic pistons that yank the legs up and down. Like a real roach, the robot skitters forward as each set of legs touches the surface.
