Namgay, who has a hunched back and a clubfoot, grinds grain for neighbors with a small mill his family purchased from the government. They are paying for the mill as they can (often the payment is made in grain and mustard oil). Namgay is also a reader of sacred texts and conducts house cleansing and healing ceremonies for their 14-house village.(Material World pages 72-73)

This old bota (wineskin) workshop called Botería San Fermin is operated by three brothers-Pedro, Victor, and Juan José Echarrí-the third generation of this family business. Their grandfather started the business 115 years ago. They've been in the present building 30 years and started learning the workmanship involved when they were young children. Originally the botería was in their home. They had three floors for living and one for the workshop. Victor is pictured. Process: They turn the stitched hide inside out, beat it on a machine to soften it (they used to have to do this by hand by beating it on a rock) and then put tar on the inside goat fur.   • Robotic surgical implements used by the da Vinci robot surgeon during minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Da Vinci is a remotely controlled robot, which gives surgeons precise control over surgical tools through an incision just one centimeter wide. The surgeon, who views the surgical site through the robot's endoscope attachment, controls the robot's arms. Such remote control gives more precise manipulation of tools than in manual surgery.   • Pencil-sized robotic surgical instruments allow heart surgeons to perform operations through a centimeter-long hole in the patient's chest. Doctors insert robotic instruments through minute "ports" in the body. Instead of hovering over the operating table, surgeons sit at a console a few feet away, controlling the robo-scalpels with a pair of joysticklike grippers. Each tool has a patented EndoWrist mechanism that allows it to move with the dexterity and precision of the human hand. The whole ensemble was developed by the Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, CA, a nonprofit R&D center created by Stanford University.   • Robonaut, with an acrylic head, holds a drill with socket attachment at the Johnson Space Center, Houston. That NASA's teleoperated humanoid-type robot, called Robonaut, has no legs is by design, because in space, says project leader Robert Ambrose, an astronaut's legs can be a big impediment to fulfilling the mission of a spacewalk. The latest version of Robonaut has two arms, a Kevlar and nylon suit, updated stereo eyes, and is getting heat sensing capability. Possibly the most significant change is the move from total teleoperation to some level of autonomy.

  • In a demonstration of mechanical dexterity, NASA's robot astronaut uses its hand to open a tether hook of the sort that will be used during the upcoming construction of the International Space Station. Designed to be as human-like as possible, Robonaut's hand has four fingers and an opposable thumb. Robonaut is the early prototype for the robotic astronaut being built at the Johnson Space Center in Texas.   • Art restorer Vyacheslav ?Slava? Grankovskiy in his studio workshop behind his home in Shlisselburg, near St. Petersburg, Russia, with his typical day's worth of food. (From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.)  The caloric value of his day's worth of food in the month of October was 3900 kcals. He is 53 years of age; 6 feet, 2 inches tall; and 184 pounds. The son of a Soviet-era collective farm leader, he was raised near the Black Sea and originally worked as an artist and engineer. Over the years, he's learned a few dozen crafts, which eventually enabled him to restore a vast number of objects, build his own house, and be his own boss. His travel adventures have included crossing the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan, where he spent time with a blind hermit and dined with a Mongol woman who hunted bears and treated him to groundhog soup. His favorite drink: Cognac. Does he ever drink soda? ?No, I use cola in restoration to remove rust, not to drink,? he says. MODEL RELEASED.

The functions of this robot are the performance of complex underwater tasks by remote manipulation from the surface. Underwater video cameras & other imaging systems relay information to a computer that produces a 3-D virtual image of the seabed. The operator is linked to this world through a headset equipped with 3-D goggles, & spatial sensor, and data gloves or other clothing that relay precision movements back through the computer to tools on the robot's limbs.   • Human Genome Project: Portrait of Leroy Hood, Caltech scientist. Leroy Hood is an American biologist. He won the 2003 Lemelson-MIT Prize for inventing "four instruments that have unlocked much of the mystery of human biology" by helping decode the genome. Hood also won the 2002 Kyoto Prize for Advanced Technology, and the 1987 Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research. His inventions include the automated DNA sequencer, a device to create proteins and an automated tool for synthesizing DNA. Hood co-founded the Institute for Systems Biology. MODEL RELEASED (1989).

Theodore Roszak, writer, professor at California State University, Hayward, California. Roszak spoke at the conference on a panel discussion on "The Case Against Computers: A Systematic Critique" with Jerry Mander of the Elmwood Institute and Richard Sclove. This portrait is in his office at Cal State, Hayward. Roszak has written a number of books, including The Making of the Counterculture, the book that named a generation. . Roszak said, "Computers are like genies that get out of control." ."The cult of information is theirs, not ours." ."Every tool ever invented is a mixed blessing." ."There never will be a machine that makes us wiser than our own naked minds.".((Roszak was most uncooperative, saying he was very busy and that it was not to his advantage to be in an article in Germany when his recent books are not translated into German. We did a few shots of him holding the TV monitor and then he said he couldn't do it anymore so my assistant wore his jacket for the rest of the shoot while he went off to another office to make phone calls.
