When the overlying water eventually returns, it carries sediments which fill in the footprints, but which are of a different composition to the underlying rock.   • Abdel Karim Aboubakar, a Sudanese refugee at the Breidjing Refugee Camp in Eastern Chad. (Abdel Karim Aboubakar is featured in the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) The caloric value of his day's worth of food on a typical day in the month of November was 2300 kcals. He is 16 years of age; 5 feet 9.5 inches tall; and 110 pounds. Aboubakar escaped over the border from the Darfur region of Sudan into eastern Chad with his mother and siblings, just ahead of the Janjaweed militia that were burning villages of black Sudanese tribes. Like thousands of other refugees, they were accepted into the camp program administrated by the United Nations High Commission on Refugees. Their meals are markedly similar to those they ate in their home country; there's just less of it. They eat a grain porridge called aiysh, with a thin soup flavored with a dried vegetable or sometimes a small chunk of dried meat if Abdel Karim's mother has been able to work in a villager's field for a day or two.   • Sweet, fried boondi, a spiced chickpea flour confection, is prepared for pilgrims in a camp at an ashram during the Kumbh Mela festival in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India. Every camp has its own large/small kitchen where food is prepared for people residing in that particular camp as well as outsiders who would walk in and out for lunch/dinner. Boondi can be a savory preparation or even sweet. A thin consistency dough is prepared using gram flour, water and spices. This boondi can be made sweet by putting in sugar syrup (prepared separately) and soaked in the syrup. Cardamom, dry fruits may be added in the syrup for flavor. The Kumbh Mela festival is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage held 4 times every 12 years, cycling between the cities of Allahabad, Nasik, Ujjain and Haridwar.  Participants of the Mela gather to cleanse themselves spiritually by bathing in the waters of India's sacred rivers.  Kumbh Mela is one of the largest religious festivals on earth, attracting millions from all over India and the world.  Past Melas have attracted up to 70 million visitors.

The micro- resonator, or 'semaphore structure', is a product of micromechanics. Micro-resonators are use to make tiny vibration sensors for engineering use. The comb-like detector ends of the micro- resonators are seen here, a thin strand of silicon running from the left detector toward top left is attached to a large resonant mass. The absence of a resonant mass fixed to the right detector indicates a fault in manufacture. To give an idea of scale, the silicon strand is 2 microns thick and 2 microns wide.   • University of California Berkeley biologist Robert Full analyzes centipede motion by observing the insect's movement across a glass plate covered with "photoelastic" gelatin. On either side of the gel are thin polarizing filters that together block all light coming through the glass. When the centipede's feet contact the gel, they temporarily deform it, altering the way light goes through it and allowing some to pass through the filters.   • In the water, pike can accelerate at a rate of eight to twelve g's, as fast as a NASA rocket. To scientists, the speed is inexplicable. In an attempt to understand how the flap of a thin fish tail can push a fish faster than any propeller, John Kumph, then an MIT graduate student, built a robotic version of a chain-pickerel?a species of pike?with a spring-wound fiberglass exoskeleton and a skin made of silicone rubber. Now under further development by iRobot, an MIT-linked company just outside Boston in Somerville, MA, the robo-fish can't yet swim nearly as fast as a real pike, suggesting how much remains to be learned.
