  • Operation by a California veterinarian on a prize-winning Koi fish. Koi are a variety of the common carp, Cyprinus carpio. Today Koi are bred in nearly every country and considered to be the most popular fresh-water ornamental pond fish. They are often referred to as being "living jewels" or "swimming flowers". If kept properly, koi can live about 30-40 years. Some have been reportedly known to live up to 200 years. The Koi hobbyists have bred over 100 color varieties. Every Koi is unique, and the patterns that are seen on a specific Koi can never be exactly repeated. The judging of Koi at exhibitions has become a refined art, which requires many years of understanding the relationship between color, pattern, size and shape, presentation, and a number of other key traits.   • Gari of Boots and Coots takes a mid-morning break in front of one of the equipment containers near a raging oil well fire in Rumaila field, Southern Iraq. Another fire blazes in the distance. The Rumaila field is one of Iraq's biggest with five billion barrels in reserve. Boots and Coots had a team of firefighters in Kuwait ready to go into Iraq several weeks before the war began. All of their equipment (including bulldozers and trucks) was flown in from Texas on large Russian cargo planes (AN-124s). Rumaila is also spelled Rumeilah.

  • Barges in the bay, which has 30-foot tides, unload from ships in Iqaluit, Nunavut Territory, Canada. Nearly all supplies come by ship, only during the ice-free spring, summer, and early fall months. Iqaluit, with population of 6,000, is the largest community in Nunavut as well as the capital city. It is located in the southeast part of Baffin Island. Formerly known as Frobisher Bay, it is at the mouth of the bay of that name, overlooking Koojesse Inlet. "Iqaluit" means 'place of many fish'. The image is part of a collection of images and documentation for Hungry Planet 2, a continuation of work done after publication of the book project Hungry Planet: What the World Eats, by Peter Menzel & Faith D'Aluisio.

  • Venders selling cremation supplies line the many narrow alleys leading to Manikarnika Ghat and Jalasi Ghat. People pass through at all times of the day and night and the cremation site never closes. Colorful shrouds in auspicious colors are sold by the piece. The color red denotes prosperity and hope. Yellow is the color of innocence. The largely polyester fabric doesn't burn very well so is often set aside and burned separately so that it doesn't impede the process of burning the body. The workers hoeing the ashes picks up remnants and wind them around their heads as decoration.

  • Pima farmer Jose Angel Galaviz Carrillo's wife Esthela makes tortillas by hand, cooking them on top of the wood stove, which also serves as a heat source during chilly Sierra Madre mountain winters a their home in Maycoba, Sonora, Mexico. (From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) Her two youngest sons wait for breakfast, while her oldest son helps José with the milking. Practically self-sufficient, the family does buy some basic food and supplies, like powdered milk, at Disconsa, one of a network of government-subsidized stores catering to rural communities, in the town of Maycoba, six miles from their home. The caloric value of her day's worth of food on a typical day in June was 1900 kcals. She is 68 years of age; 5 feet, 3 inches tall; and 121 pounds. Like most of her neighbors, the widow farmer and lifelong resident of Ganjiagou Village,  in Sichuan Province, keeps chickens, grinds her own soy beans for soy milk, and has a garden that supplies much of her greens.   • Alternative Energy: Mesquite Lake Cattle Manure Power Plant, California. The Mesquite Lake Resource Recovery Project is the world's first cattle manure-fired, commercial scale power plant. The plant burns cattle manure from nearby feedlots. The manure was becoming a serious waste problem because it was of limited value as a fertilizer in the area. In many cases, feedlot owners had to pay to have the manure removed. At Mesquite Lake, this waste material is burned and the heat generates steam, which drives a turbine/generator and produces about 17 megawatts of electrical power. After supplying plant needs, 14-15 megawatts are sold to Southern California Edison. This is enough power to supply the needs of a community of about 15,000 to 20,000 homes. (1990).

  • Sewer inspection robot. Kurt I, a sewer inspection robot prototype. Here, the robot is moving through a simulated sewer at a German government-owned research and development centre. Unlike its predecessors, the Kurt I, and its successor, Kurt II, are cable-less, autonomous robots, which have their own power supply and piloting system. Kurt uses two low-powered lasers (upper centre) to beam a grid (red, lower centre) into its path. When the gridlines curve, indicating a bend or intersection in the pipe, the robot matches the curves against a digital map in its computer. It will then pilot itself to its destination.   • Close up view of some of the rectangular photovoltaic cells that comprised the power supply for Sunraycer, General Motors' entry for the Pentax World Solar Challenge, the first international solar-powered car race. The event began in Darwin, Northern Territories on November 1st, 1987 and finished in Adelaide, South Australia. An array of some 7,200 of these cells was arranged in a hood covering the front & back of the vehicle. Sunraycer was the eventual winner, taking 5 1/2 days to complete the 1,950 miles, traveling at an average speed of 41.6 miles per hour. (1987)

  • Professor Robert J. Full's Poly-PEDAL Lab at UC Berkeley has been working with roboticists for years, supplying them with information on small animal locomotion that is used to conStruct innovative robots. Recently, the Lab has been working with the Stanford Research Institute (SRI), testing and evaluating artificial muscles. Dr. Kenneth Meijer (from Holland) compares and measures a Stanford Artificial Muscle with a natural one from the leg of the Death Head Cockroach. After cooling the cockroach and exposing leg extensor muscle number 179, an electrode is suctioned into the muscle to simulate the nerve-to-muscle connection.   • Professor Ron Fearing and his students at the University of California at Berkeley are using Dickinson's information to build a micromechanical fly. In the photo a 30% larger than final size scale mockup of the Micromechanical Flying Insect (MFI) is compared with its inspiration, the blow fly Calliphora erythrocephala. Researchers expect the stainless steel MFI to be flying in the lab by 2003. The main problem to be overcome in such a small device is an adequate power supply.

  • With government-funded construction clogging roadways throughout Japan, traffic robots like this one have become increasingly common. Standing in the Tokyo restaurant supply district, this artificial policeman politely raises and lowers its arm to slow down approaching vehicles. Anzen Taro (Safety Sam), are full 3-D mock-ups of policemen so realistic that oncoming drivers can't tell them from the real thing. Although the makers of these machines describe their products as "robots," many engineers would not, because they do not respond to their environment and cannot be reprogrammed. Japan.   • Mopane worm sellers in a South African market in Thohoyandou claim the lack of rain to be attributable for the smaller than normal supply of the insects. Mpumalanga, South Africa. "Mopane" refers to the mopane tree, which the caterpillar eats. Dried mopane worms have three times the protein content of beef and can be stored for many months. (Man Eating Bugs page 127) .
