This garage is the birthplace of the world's first high-technology region, 'Silicon Valley'. The idea for such a region originated with Dr. Frederick Terman, a Stanford University Professor who encouraged his students to start up their own electronics companies in the area rather than joining established firms in the East. The first two students to follow his advice were William R. Hewlett and David Packard, who in 1938 began developing their first product, an audio oscillator, in this garage. (1999).

  • Philip Zimmerman: a data security expert who wrote a famous cryptography program for encoding computer communications, at the IT Conference on Computer Freedom and Privacy in San Francisco, California (1995) Zimmermann created a powerful encryption program called "Pretty Good Privacy" (PGP) and made it available for free. Zimmermann is in trouble now because his "cryptography for the masses" slipped out of America via the Internet and has been downloaded by many foreigners. He was being investigated for violating a federal weapons-export-law. (Because it makes it hard for the Feds to eavesdrop on the Internet when people encrypt their messages). Zimmermann was photographed with looking through the encryption code that was printed out on acetate. Model Released. (1995).

A refurbished school bus with 17 ATARIs on board circulated among the 21 public schools in the district, giving each fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grader several opportunities to work with Atari's PILOT language. An old school bus (circa 1953), provided by the district, was painted red, white and blue and named the Napa Valley Unified School District Computer Lab. The lab accommodated 32 students at a time with each child sharing a 400. Each learning station also included an 11-inch Quasar television for video display and a cassette recorder for storage. The instructor's station was equipped with a disk drive and dot matrix printer as well as a TV and tape recorder. The lab sessions were 45-minutes each and occurred three times within two weeks. Theodore Roszak, writer, professor at California State University, Hayward, California. Roszak spoke at the conference on a panel discussion on "The Case Against Computers: A Systematic Critique" with Jerry Mander of the Elmwood Institute and Richard Sclove. This portrait is in his office at Cal State, Hayward. Roszak has written a number of books, including The Making of the Counterculture, the book that named a generation. . Roszak said, "Computers are like genies that get out of control." ."The cult of information is theirs, not ours." ."Every tool ever invented is a mixed blessing." ."There never will be a machine that makes us wiser than our own naked minds.".((Roszak was most uncooperative, saying he was very busy and that it was not to his advantage to be in an article in Germany when his recent books are not translated into German. We did a few shots of him holding the TV monitor and then he said he couldn't do it anymore so my assistant wore his jacket for the rest of the shoot while he went off to another office to make phone calls. The GMD team plays in the medium-sized division, which uses a real soccer ball on a field about a third as big as a basketball court. Each robot monitors the position of the ball with a video camera; special software lets the machine track its round shape. The cameras behind Kismet's big blue eyes send data to its computer, which has software allowing the robot to detect people and bright toys visually. In addition, the software recognizes people by vocal affect. Then, following its programming, it reacts, twisting its features in a comically exaggerated display of emotion.   • Silicon Valley, California; Icarian corporation software; 5:18 PM: Doug Merritt and Rani Hublou, the husband and wife team that leads Icarian, Inc. and the Icarian workforce in the company's Sunnyvale, California office. Merritt says that Icarian is managed so as to be a fun place to work. This is exemplified by the company-wide Friday afternoon in-line-skate hockey competitions that are held in the parking lot. Usually they drink beer from the company keg in the company lunchroom after the game but since this was the beginning of the Fourth of July weekend, everyone went home after the game at 6 PM. (1999).

Neighbors volunteered their cars for the photo: Mercedes, Lexus, Corvette, and a second-car Volvo. After the shoot, the wife of the Apple executive asked that we store the sculpture in the two-story atrium of her house where it resided surrounded by a spiral staircase until donated to a museum.   • In the East Bay suburb of Walnut Creek, near San Francisco, Will Wright and family collectively in their garage preparing their creation for "Robot Wars"(daughter Cassidy 11, nephew Patrick 14, and Will). Later that week, in a battle pit ringed by six-foot sheets of bulletproof glass and a sellout crowd, radio-controlled gladiators battle their robots to the mechanical death. Will Wright developed the Sims software games.

  • Surrounded by the robots used in his Georgia Institute of Technology laboratory, computer scientist Ronald C. Arkin specializes in behavior-based robots, he's written a textbook with that name. Concerned more with software than hardware, he buys robots from companies and modifies their behavior, increasing their capacities. But outside such places, what Arkin calls "the physical situatedness" of the robot is "absolutely crucial" to its ability to act and react appropriately.   • Lurching from side to side like an infant figuring out how to walk, the biped-locomotion robot in the Fukuda Lab at Nagoya University tentatively steps forward under the parental supervision of graduate student Kazuo Takahashi. Designed by Toshio Fukuda, a professor of mechanical engineering, the robot is intended to test what Fukuda calls "hierarchical evolutionary algorithms" software that repeats an action, learning from its mistakes until it approaches perfection. Appearing to be supported by a high-tech Zimmer frame, computer scientist, John Airey uses a steer-able treadmill to progress on a walk- through tour of a virtual image of a church hall. As he paces on the real treadmill, so he moves towards the altar of the 3-D computer-generated image of the church. Such software packages would be invaluable to architects in judging how their designs may be received by the people who will use them, perhaps well in advance of any real foundations being laid. The ping pong table they are meeting over was Icarian's first meeting table.   • Seeming to touch the objects on his screen, Peter Berkelman, then a graduate student at the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute in Pittsburgh, PA, scoops up virtual blocks with a special device that communicates the sensation of touching them. The device, which has a handle suspended in powerful magnetic fields, can move with all six possible degrees of freedom: up and down, side to side, back and forth, yaw, pitch, and roll.   • Student Yousuke Kato points to a female face robot created at the Science University of Tokyo, Japan, Fumio Hara Robotics Lab. The female face robot (secondgeneration) has shape-memory electric actuators that move beneath the robots' silicon skin to change the face into different facial expressions much as muscles do in the human face. The research robot undergoes a metamorphosis with each class of students assigned to work on it. The latest iteration allows the robot's face to mold into six different expressions: happiness, sadness, fear, disgust, anger, and surprise. In some images, the computer monitor displays a graphical representation of the software creating the expression on the robot.
