  • Solar energy electrical generating power plant in the Mojave Desert near Barstow, California. Solar One consists of a circular arrangement of 1, 818 mirrors, each measuring 23x23 feet (7x7 meters). These mirrors focus the sunlight onto a huge central receiver, which sits atop a 300-foot (91 meter) tower. The mirrors are computer controlled to track the path of the sun. Water is pumped through the receiver and heated to a temperature of 960 degrees Fahrenheit. The resultant steam runs a turbine, producing 10 megawatts of power for eight hours a day. (1982).

  • Arizona. Lightning. Time exposure image of lightning strikes over Tucson, Arizona, USA..The silhouette of a giant saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) is in the foreground at right and left. Car tail light trails are also seen in the foreground. Lightning occurs when a large electrical charge builds up in a cloud, probably due to the friction of water and ice particles. The charge induces an opposite charge on the ground, and a few leader electrons travel to the ground. When one makes contact, there is a huge backflow of energy up the path of the electron. This produces a bright flash of light, and temperatures of up to 30,000 degrees Celsius. Photographed in Tucson, Arizona, USA. .

  • Myron Kruger jumps in front of a VideoPlace screen. Kruger designed this system to allow people to interface directly with computers. The operator stands in front of this large, backlit screen. A video camera is used to form an image of the silhouette - the computer then interprets different poses or actions as different commands. The results are displayed on an equally- large video screen, the image of the operator being manipulated in response to the commands. Kruger was the first to use the term 'artificial reality' for this concept. Model released. (1990)

  • Montage of a fluorescence micrograph of human chromosomes showing the mapping of cloned fragments of DNA (DNA probes), overlaid with the silhouette of an infant & a computer graphics model of the DNA molecule. The chromosomes are stained to give red fluorescence; with the DNA probes represented as small regions of green/yellow fluorescence. Mapping chromosomes may be regarded as a physical survey of each chromosome to find the location of genes or other markers. DNA mapping is one phase of the human genome project, an ambitious plan to reveal all of the genetic information encoded by every human chromosome.

  • Myron Kruger and his assistant, Katrin Hinrichsen, 'shooting' at each other with computer-generated sparks. Kruger is a pioneer of artificial reality, a method allowing people to interface directly with computers. In Kruger's method, called VideoPlace, the participants stand in front of a backlit screen. A video camera forms an image of their silhouette; the computer is programmed to respond to particular actions in a particular way. Here the computer sees the operators pointing, and interprets this as fire a spark in this direction. The computer-generated image appears in the background here on a large video screen. Model Released (1990)

  • Weather: Rainbow in Wooden Valley, Napa County, California. A rainbow silhouettes a turkey vulture. Rainbows occur when the observer is facing falling rain but with the sun behind them. White light is reflected inside the raindrops and split into its component colors by refraction. (1988)
