  • Fossil mining. Research team members at Dinosaur Cove pin steel reinforcing mesh to the wall of their mine with long expansion bolts driven in by a jackhammer. Dinosaur Cove is situated near Cape Otway in southern Australia.  Dinosaur Cove is the world's first mine developed specifically for paleontology, normally the scientists rely on commercial mining to make the excavations. The site is of particular interest as the fossils found date from about 100 million years ago, when Australia was much closer to the South Pole than today [1989].

  • Radio Telescope: The Mars Antenna in the Mojave Desert, California. Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex. Standing 24 stories tall, the Mars antenna is the largest dish at Goldstone. It was originally built as a 64-meter-diameter (210-foot) antenna and received its first signal from the Mariner 4 mission to Mars. By 1988, the Mars dish, along with the 64-meter antennas in Spain and Australia, was upgraded to 70 meters (230 feet). These 70-meter antennas increase the receiving power of the Deep Space Network.   • Coober Pedy Opal Mine, Southern Australia. Opal is a form of hydrous silicon oxide. The stones are conglomerates of microscopic spherical particles - opal is never found as a true crystal. The blue/green and dark blue forms seen here are considered to be precious. Opal has a beautiful colored luster due to the varied dispersion of light from its structure. Opal may also be seen in fossils, where it replaces the organic matter (especially bones) in buried remains. [1989]

  • Plant biotechnology research into the cultivation of disease-free potatoes, showing coated (white) & uncoated potato seeds. Scientists are working to provide growers with the ability to plant an acre with no more than one pound of seed, instead of the tons of tubers (seed potatoes) presently required to do the job. Seed also has the advantage that it is less likely to rot in storage: the resulting reduction in waste is projected to reduce growers' costs by $100 per acre.   • MODEL RELEASED. Immunodeficiency research. Dr Don Mosier counts mouse and human cells in a SCID (severe combined immunodeficiency) mouse that he implanted with a human immune system. The device at right is a fluorescence-activated cell sorter. The rare genetic mutation of SCID, found in both mice and humans, destroys the immune system and the body is unable to fight infection. Dr Mosier managed to implant disease-fighting human white blood cells into SCID mice giving them a permanent human immune system. This breakthrough enables researchers at the Scripps Research Institute in California, USA, to study human immune disorders such as SCID, AIDS, leukemia and allergies. MODEL RELEASED.[1995]

  • Zaiger Tissue Culture Lab. Floyd Zaiger (Born 1926) is a biologist who is most noted for his work in fruit genetics. Zaiger Genetics, located in Modesto, California, was founded in 1958. Over the years, Zaiger has received numerous awards in the US and Europe. He has spent his life in pursuit of the perfect fruit, developing both cultivars of existing species and new hybrids such as the pluot and the aprium.  [1983]

  • An unexploded rockeye submunition (cluster bomb), in the Magwa Oil Field. After finding these rockeye submunitions all over Kuwait, the British Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team detonate them with plastic explosives from a safe distance. They walked over the entire country searching for unexploded munitions and land mines. Nearly a million land mines were deployed on the beaches and along the Saudi and Iraqi border. In addition, tens of thousands of unexploded bomblets (from cluster bombs dropped by Allied aircraft) littered the desert. July 1991. More than 700 wells were set ablaze by retreating Iraqi troops creating the largest man-made environmental disaster in history.

They want to keep the snakes from spreading to other islands or the mainland USA. There are no birds on the Pacific Island of Guam thanks to the Brown Tree Snake. These hungry egg-eating snakes have overrun the tropical island after arriving on a lumber freighter from New Guinea during World War II. Besides wiping out the bird population, Brown Tree Snakes cause frequent power outages: they commit short circuit suicide when climbing between power lines.

  • Mountain View, California.David Koch, a researcher at the NASA/Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California, displays an area in the sky that can be approximated by two handfuls of sky at arms length. David Koch is planning to search an area of this size with the KEPLER space telescope/photometer for as of yet undiscovered terrestrial planets in the "habitable zone". The area he plans to study is located in the Milky Way, and is known as the H-2 area. Koch plans to search this area using the KEPLER orbiting telescope, looking at 100,000 stars every four minutes for four years. In doing so, he expects to find about 400 earth sized planets as well as 800 planets twice the size of earth. Koch is double exposed with the 120 inch telescope at the Lick Observatory on Mt.   • Physics: Samuel C.C. Ting (b.1936), Project Director of the L-3 Detector Experiment at CERN's Large Electron- Positron Collider (LEP). Sam Ting won the 1976 Nobel Prize for physics (shared with Burton Richter), following his discovery of the J/Psi particle at the Brookhaven Laboratory in 1974. The J/Psi particle, and the Psi-prime particle discovered by Richter, implied the existence of two new quarks, Charm and anti-Charm. He is 59 years of age; 5 feet, 7 inches tall; and 240 pounds. Din came to the United States as a young man in search of freedom and opportunity and remains pleased with what he found. He has lived in Chicago for 25 years and has been driving a cab for the past two decades, five to six days a week, 10 hours a day. He knows where all of the best Indian and Pakistani restaurants are throughout Chicago, but prefers his wife's home cooking above all. His favorites? ?Kebabs, chicken tika, or biryani?spicy food,? he says. Tika is dry-roasted marinated meat, and biryani is a rice dish with meat, fish, or vegetables that is highly seasoned with saffron or turmeric. MODEL RELEASED. .

  • When a terrifying earthquake leveled part of Turkey in the fall of 1999, rescuers had trouble pulling victims from the rubble because it was too risky to crawl through the unstable ruins. As a result, some people died before they could be rescued. Shigeo Hirose of the Tokyo Technical Institute thinks he may have the solution: Blue Dragon (Souryu in Japanese). A light, triple-jointed robot with a digital camera in its nose, Blue Dragon could crawl through an earthquake-damaged building in search of survivors. Wriggling over a pile of shattered concrete on a construction site at the institute's campus, the battery-operated robot fell over several times, but righted itself quickly and continued slithering through the pile of stone.   • Proton decay experiment to determine the ultimate stability of matter..Proton decay. A technician [works with] a 20" (50cm) photomultiplier tube used in the search for proton decay. Hundreds of such tubes line a tank containing 9000 tons of water some 1000 meters underground in a zinc mine in Japan. Tokyo University's Kamiokande experiment was designed to look for decaying protons. If a proton decays, the charged particles it generates move through the water faster than light, and so generate blue 'Cerenkov' radiation. It is this that the photomultipliers detect. Computers then decide whether the event was a decay, or a collision with a solar neutrino. Japan. (1985)

  • In a simulated bedroom complete with stuffed animals, tossed bedclothes, and a sleeping dummy victim, Robin R. Murphy of the University of South Florida keeps tabs on her marsupial robot; or, rather, robots. Developed to help search-and-rescue teams, the robots will work as a team. The larger "mother" is designed to roll into a disaster site. When it can go no farther, several "daughter" robots will emerge, marsupial fashion, from a cavity in its chest. The daughter robots will crawl on highly mobile tracks to look for survivors, feeding the mother robot images of what they see. Although the project is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Murphy's budget is hardly overwhelming.
