  • The Holy Land Experience is a Christian theme park in Orlando, Florida. The theme park recreates the architecture and themes of the ancient city of Jerusalem in 1st century Israel. The Holy Land Experience was founded and built by Marvin Rosenthal, a Jewish born Baptist minister but is now owned by the Trinity Broadcasting Network. Rosenthal is also the chief executive of a ministry devoted to 'reaching the Jewish people for the Messiah' called Zion's Hope. Beside the theme park architectural recreations, there are church services and live presentations of biblical stories, most notably a big stage production featuring the life of Jesus. There are several restaurants and gift shops in the theme park. The staff dresses in biblical costumes. Admission is $40 for adults and $25 for youths, aged 6-18.

There are no birds on the Pacific Island of Guam thanks to the Brown Tree Snake. These hungry egg-eating snakes have overrun the tropical island after arriving on a lumber freighter from New Guinea during World War II. Besides wiping out the bird population, Brown Tree Snakes cause frequent power outages: they commit short circuit suicide when climbing between power lines.

  • The Counter Intelligence program at MIT Media Lab in Boston, Massachusetts is focusing on developing a digitally connected kitchen of the future. By exploring new technologies they hope to expand the art of food preparation as well as social interactions in the kitchen. One aspect of their research is to create kitchen utensils that contain memories. In this image a digital scale helps to measure out meals.  Scale built into countertop.   • In the same building as Robert Full at UC Berkeley is Michael Dickinson, whose email address "FlymanD" is revealing. Dickinson is a biologist specializing in the study of the aerodynamics of flapping flight. His bizarre studies of fruit fly flight are fascinating. In one small room sits a Plexiglas tank filled with two metric tons of mineral oil. Suspended in the oil are giant mechanical models of fruit fly wings, RoboFly. Because the tiny movements of the wings of a real fruit fly displace air on such a small scale that the air acts sticky, RoboFly enables Dickinson to study similar forces when the giant wings are flapping in oil.

  • Fossilized remains of a prehistoric fish (Lepidotes). This example has been particularly well preserved, with the scale patterns and the large, bony head clearly defined. This fish was about 80cm in length, and was found in the Holzmaden area of Germany. Such a piece commands very high prices at fossil fairs, such as the one at Tucson, Arizona. (1991)

  • Alternative Energy: Mesquite Lake Cattle Manure Power Plant, California. The Mesquite Lake Resource Recovery Project is the world's first cattle manure-fired, commercial scale power plant. The plant burns cattle manure from nearby feedlots. The manure was becoming a serious waste problem because it was of limited value as a fertilizer in the area. In many cases, feedlot owners had to pay to have the manure removed. At Mesquite Lake, this waste material is burned and the heat generates steam, which drives a turbine/generator and produces about 17 megawatts of electrical power. After supplying plant needs, 14-15 megawatts are sold to Southern California Edison. This is enough power to supply the needs of a community of about 15,000 to 20,000 homes. (1990).

The micro- resonator, or 'semaphore structure', is a product of micromechanics. Micro-resonators are use to make tiny vibration sensors for engineering use. The comb-like detector ends of the micro- resonators are seen here, a thin strand of silicon running from the left detector toward top left is attached to a large resonant mass. The absence of a resonant mass fixed to the right detector indicates a fault in manufacture. To give an idea of scale, the silicon strand is 2 microns thick and 2 microns wide. A scanning tunneling microscope that is probing the surface of gold is linked to a force-feedback "magic wrist" which moves as the microscope probe maps out the atomic structure, enabling the user to "feel" the atoms.   • A vendor cleans corn as she waits for customers in the Santa Carolina Market in Quito, Ecuador.  Grocery stores, supermarkets, and megamarkets all have their roots in village market areas where farmers and vendors would converge once or twice a week to sell their produce and goods. In farming communities, just about everyone had something to trade or sell. As transportation became more efficient (especially refrigerated transport), and farms became huge, big corporations moved into the food business to take advantage of scale, especially in the United States. Now the convenience of one-stop shopping has made this business even bigger. Even the smaller supermarkets are being bought up or run out of business by the larger concerns. Some small town markets still exist today throughout much of Europe, although to a lesser degree there as well. Small markets are still the lifeblood of communities in the developing world, and, for better or worse, will remain so until they are numerous and big enough to attract the conglomerates' attention. Coming full circle, farmers markets have come back into vogue in some places in the USA where they had largely disappeared.

  • Professor Ron Fearing and his students at the University of California at Berkeley are using Dickinson's information to build a micromechanical fly. In the photo a 30% larger than final size scale mockup of the Micromechanical Flying Insect (MFI) is compared with its inspiration, the blow fly Calliphora erythrocephala. Researchers expect the stainless steel MFI to be flying in the lab by 2003. The main problem to be overcome in such a small device is an adequate power supply.

  • Micro Technology: Micromechanics: Light micrograph of the detector 'teeth' of a micro-resonator. This is a tiny mechanical resonating structure, made by the same silicon deposition process used in the manufacture of microcircuits. The 'teeth' seen here detect the motion of the resonator, the central buff-colored object. The dark vertical lines running above and below the resonator are the strands of silicon connecting the sensor to the resonant masses. The strands are only two microns thick, but at this scale silicon has a greater mechanical strength than steel. Micro-resonators have a variety of uses in detecting very small amplitude motions. The Kericho district in the Great Rift Valley has rich volcanic soil, cool air, and a moist tropical climate that's perfect for growing tea. With its popular tea brand Lipton, Unilever has helped make Kenya the number one exporter of black tea in the world. Since the evergreen tea bushes are picked every 14 to 17 days year-round, there is constant work for pickers. They're paid by the kilo of tea leaves and a field foreman reported that they can earn between $3 and $9 (USD) per day. To compete with Unilever and James Finlay, another huge corporate tea producer in Kenya, the Kenya Tea Development Agency represents half a million small-scale tea growers throughout Kenya.
