  • Micro Technology: Micromechanics: Image showing the small size of the micro- accelerometer used to trip a car 'air-bag' safety device. The micro-accelerometer is seen as the small black dot in the middle of the hand. In a collision, the micro-accelerometer detects the sudden slowing down of the car. This triggers a circuit, which rapidly inflates a plastic bag with air. The air bag deploys between the driver and the steering wheel, preventing serious facial injury as the driver is thrown forward. The air- bag inflates fully in about 0.2 seconds. Micro- accelerometers are mechanical devices made by the same processes that are used in the manufacture of conventional silicon microcircuits.

When the SALT Treaty called for the de-activation of the 18 Titan missile silos that ring Tucson, volunteers at the Pima Air Museum asked if one could be retained for public tours. After much negotiation, including additional talks with SALT officials, the Green Valley complex of the 390th Strategic Missile Wing was opened to the public. Deep in the ground, behind a couple of 6,000 pound blast doors is the silo itself. The 110 foot tall missile weighed 170 tons when it was fueled and ready to fly.

  • With government-funded construction clogging roadways throughout Japan, traffic robots like this one have become increasingly common. Standing in the Tokyo restaurant supply district, this artificial policeman politely raises and lowers its arm to slow down approaching vehicles. Anzen Taro (Safety Sam), are full 3-D mock-ups of policemen so realistic that oncoming drivers can't tell them from the real thing. Although the makers of these machines describe their products as "robots," many engineers would not, because they do not respond to their environment and cannot be reprogrammed. Japan.   • RADON CURE: Defunct gold and uranium mines south of Helena, Montana, attract ailing tourists, who bask in radioactive radon gas and drink radioactive water to improve their health. Each summer, hundreds of people, come to the radon health mines to relax and treat arthritis, lupus, asthma and other chronic cripplers. Visitor Ralph Clark at the Merry Widow Mine, which is a tunnel into the mountain, with a temperature that remains around 60 degrees in both winter and summer. The typical vacation at the Merry Widow Health Mine lasts anywhere from a week to two weeks and visitors are recommended to sit in the mine two or three times a day. Visitors also soak their feet in the freezing cold mineral waters or drink the mine water, which they claim is very productive to good health. The water at the Merry Widow Mine has been tested by the State Health Department and found to be pure for drinking purposes. The mineshaft touts radon levels as much as 175 times the federal safety standard for houses. The permitted total visit is determined by the radiation level of the particular mine. The average visitor is 72 years old. The mines appeal to "plain people," such as the Amish or the Mennonites, because of the "natural" healing aspects, the lack of commercialization, and the relatively low cost-per-hour for treatment sessions.   • Deftly opening a door, the Honda P3 walks its assigned path at the Honda Research Center, outside Tokyo, Japan. The product of a costly decade-long effort, the Honda robotic project was only released from its shroud of corporate secrecy in 1996. In a carefully choreographed performance, P3 walks a line, opens a door, turns a corner, and, after a safety chain is attached, climbs a flight of stairs. Despite its mechanical sophistication, it can't respond to its environment. If people were to step in its way, the burly robot would knock them down without noticing them. Ultimately, of course, Honda researchers hope to change that. But, in what seems an attempt to hedge the company's bet, P3 senior engineer Masato Hirose is also working on sending the robot to places where it cannot possibly injure anyone.   • Safety tour at underground storage of radioactive wastes. This is one of the chambers of the Waste Isolation Pilot Project (WIPP), 700 meters below ground. WIPP is a research project to determine the suitability of the local salt rocks as a storage site for highly- radioactive transuranic waste from nuclear power stations. Such waste materials may have radioactive half-lives of thousands of years, and so must be isolated in a geologically stable environment. The rocket trails a fine copper wire, providing an easy path for the lightning to reach Earth. This allows the scientists to measure the current, voltage and other parameters of the lightning bolts. To ensure safety, the rocket is launched by blowing through a tube to activate a pneumatic switch. This prevents the operator from making accidental electrical contact with the lightning.   • In Osaka, Japan, battery-powered robots?called Anzen Taro (Safety Sam) are used to control traffic. Robots like this one are becoming more common in Japan around government funded construction sites. These three dimensional robots can often be mistaken for real traffic guards.

  • Utterly ignoring the safety chain attached to the base of its "neck," the Honda P3 confidently walks down a flight of steps in the company lab. More than a decade ago, at the beginning of the Honda project, the research team concluded that their robot would have to be able to walk, rather than simply roll on wheels. Wheeled robots, they decided, just couldn't function in a contemporary home full of stairs, toy-strewn floors, thick pile rugs, and other obstacles. Today P3 can walk with impressive smoothness. The only real sign of its robotic nature is the way it begins to walk with a little knee-dip, to compensate for the absence of a pelvis. Japan.
