(Saleh Abdul Fadlallah is featured in the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) Domesticated since 2000 BC, camels are used less as beasts of burden now, and more for their meat. Because they can run up to 40 miles per hour for short bursts, dealers hobble one leg when they are unloaded at the Birqash market. They are marked with painted symbols to make them easier for buyers and sellers to identify. Both brokers and camels have a reputation for being surly, and the brokers don't hesitate to flail the camels with their long sticks to maintain their dominance. MODEL RELEASED.

  • Every week, the Revis family (foreground, Brandon Demery, behind him is Ron) faithfully trekked to the health club in the Wakefield Medical Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, a hospital complex, for two-hour exercise sessions. They enjoyed the workouts, but found them so time-consuming that they wound up eating more fast food than ever. The caloric value of his day's worth of food for a typical day in the month of November was 5200 kcals. He is 69 years of age; 5 feet 2.5 inches tall and 140 pounds.  João's new house has no electricity and the toilet is simply the end of the big balsa wood logs the house is floating on. There is, however, running water, and plenty of it, in the half-mile-wide branch of the river they live on. Unfortunately the water is not potable, but it is teeming with fish, including piranha, which can make swimming during the early morning or evening worrisome. The curimata in the photo is just one of dozens of species that makes its way onto João's table. They use stainless steel fermentation tanks but employs both modern and traditional methods in the winemaking process. Their aging barrels are both American and French oak. The bodegas' youngest wine is four years old. The winery maintains an area where buyers of quantities of the wine can store what they buy. The micro- resonator, or 'semaphore structure', is a product of micromechanics. Micro-resonators are use to make tiny vibration sensors for engineering use. The comb-like detector ends of the micro- resonators are seen here, a thin strand of silicon running from the left detector toward top left is attached to a large resonant mass. The absence of a resonant mass fixed to the right detector indicates a fault in manufacture. To give an idea of scale, the silicon strand is 2 microns thick and 2 microns wide.   • João Agustinho Cardoso, a fisherman, in his floating house on a branch of the Solimoes River with his typical day's worth of food in  Manacapuru, Brazil. (From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) The caloric value of his day's worth of food for a typical day in the month of November was 5200 kcals. He is 69 years of age; 5 feet 2.5 inches tall and 140 pounds.  João's new house has no electricity and the toilet is simply the end of the big balsa wood logs the house is floating on. There is, however, running water, and plenty of it, in the half-mile-wide branch of the river they live on. Unfortunately the water is not potable, but it is teeming with fish, including piranha, which can make swimming during the early morning or evening worrisome. The curimata in the photo is just one of dozens of species that makes its way onto João's table. Absent from his daily diet are any alcoholic or caffeinated beverages, eschewed by his Seventh-day Adventist religion.  MODEL RELEASED.

  • Micro Technology: Micromechanics: Light micrograph of the detector 'teeth' of a micro-resonator. This is a tiny mechanical resonating structure, made by the same silicon deposition process used in the manufacture of microcircuits. The 'teeth' seen here detect the motion of the resonator, the central buff-colored object. The dark vertical lines running above and below the resonator are the strands of silicon connecting the sensor to the resonant masses. The strands are only two microns thick, but at this scale silicon has a greater mechanical strength than steel. Micro-resonators have a variety of uses in detecting very small amplitude motions.   • USA.rs.312.qxxs.A surprising amount of the lab's work at Robert Full's Poly-PEDAL laboratory at UC Berkeley (California) focuses on cockroaches, because they are exceptionally mobile?for their size, the fastest species on the planet. The fastest roach is a big species known, melodramatically, as the death-head roach, seen here in its "run" at the Poly-PEDAL lab. As the run demonstrates, cockroaches do not have to have secure footing to move quickly. Instead, they use two alternating sets of legs (two on one side, one on the other) as springs, almost bouncing themselves forward. Gutierrez works on the platform for seven days then is off at home for seven days.   While on the platform he runs on its helipad, practices karate, lifts weights, and jumps rope to keep fit. His food for the seven days comes from the platform cafeteria which, though plagued with cockroaches, turns out food choices that run from healthful to greasy-fried. Fresh squeezed orange juice is on the menu as well and Gutierrez drinks three liters of it a day himself. His diet changed about ten years ago when he decided that he'd rather be more fit than fat like many of his platform colleagues. PDVSA is the state oil company of Venezuela.

  • Used tires entering a prototype burning-burning power station in Westley, California. The tires are used as fuel to run an electricity generator. It is estimated that one tire can serve the energy needs of the average northern California household for a day. A tire mountain containing around 40 million tires dominates the landscape (background); the plant is expected to burn some 4 million tires annually. Several environmental protection systems reduce emissions from the plant; a smog-control system neutralizes nitrous oxides, a scrubber system removes sulphur & a giant vacuum cleaner removes fly ash. Both the sulphur & the zinc- containing fly ash are recycled. (1988).
