Miyabiyama eats now to maintain his weight rather than to gain it, unlike the younger less gargantuan wrestlers in his stable who are eating a lot to pack on weight.

  • In the main grinding room of the Rochester Meat Company in Grand Meadow, Minnesota, where meat grinder Kelvin Lester works, workers roll vats of freshly ground beef from the mixing and grinding machines to the machines that form the hamburger patties. The patties are spit out onto a conveyer belt that goes through spiral flash-freezing tunnels, and then the frozen pink pucks are packed into big boxes for restaurants.

  • Chen Zhen, a university student, with her typical day's worth of food on Nanjing East Road in Shanghai, China. (From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) The caloric value of her typical day's worth of food in June was 2600 kcals. She is 20 years of age; 5 feet, 5 inches tall and 106 pounds.  Although she doesn't care for noodles or rice, a special rice roll is her favorite snack: black glutinous rice wrapped around youtiao (fried bread), pickled vegetables, mustard greens, and flosslike threads of dried pork. Zhen and her friends eat at KFC about three times a week, something they couldn't afford without the company's coupons. Meanwhile, her father and grandparents, who live in a tiny apartment in northeast Shanghai, go without meat during the week so they can afford to share a special meal with Zhen on her weekend visits.   • In a simulated bedroom complete with stuffed animals, tossed bedclothes, and a sleeping dummy victim, Robin R. Murphy of the University of South Florida keeps tabs on her marsupial robot; or, rather, robots. Developed to help search-and-rescue teams, the robots will work as a team. The larger "mother" is designed to roll into a disaster site. When it can go no farther, several "daughter" robots will emerge, marsupial fashion, from a cavity in its chest. The daughter robots will crawl on highly mobile tracks to look for survivors, feeding the mother robot images of what they see. Although the project is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Murphy's budget is hardly overwhelming.   • Seeming to touch the objects on his screen, Peter Berkelman, then a graduate student at the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute in Pittsburgh, PA, scoops up virtual blocks with a special device that communicates the sensation of touching them. The device, which has a handle suspended in powerful magnetic fields, can move with all six possible degrees of freedom: up and down, side to side, back and forth, yaw, pitch, and roll.   • Utterly ignoring the safety chain attached to the base of its "neck," the Honda P3 confidently walks down a flight of steps in the company lab. More than a decade ago, at the beginning of the Honda project, the research team concluded that their robot would have to be able to walk, rather than simply roll on wheels. Wheeled robots, they decided, just couldn't function in a contemporary home full of stairs, toy-strewn floors, thick pile rugs, and other obstacles. Today P3 can walk with impressive smoothness. The only real sign of its robotic nature is the way it begins to walk with a little knee-dip, to compensate for the absence of a pelvis. Japan. In her farmhouse kitchen in the village of Adamka, in central Poland, 93-year-old Maria Kwiatkowska (Hubert Sobczynski's friend Borys's grandmother) slices the cheesecake she baked for the traditional family gathering on All Saints Day. After visiting the graves of their relatives in the local cemetery, her children and grandchildren descend on her for a splendid lunch of noodle soup with cabbage and carrots, pork roast stuffed with prunes, pickled pumpkin, a fruit-nut roll, and cheesecake.   • Unilever tea plantation workers' housing amidst the lush, rolling tea fields in the Kericho district, Kenya. (From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.)  The Kericho district in the Great Rift Valley has rich volcanic soil, cool air, and a moist tropical climate that's perfect for growing tea. With its popular tea brand Lipton, Unilever has helped make Kenya the number one exporter of black tea in the world. Since the evergreen tea bushes are picked every 14 to 17 days year-round, there is constant work for pickers. They're paid by the kilo of tea leaves and a field foreman reported that they can earn between $3 and $9 (USD) per day. To compete with Unilever and James Finlay, another huge corporate tea producer in Kenya, the Kenya Tea Development Agency represents half a million small-scale tea growers throughout Kenya.

In addition to rolling out the red tarps and unfolding the display tables, they must cut and ice the fish, devoting special attention to Sicily's beloved (and increasingly endangered) pesce spada (swordfish), freshly cut chunks of which he arranges around its severed head.
