  • Virtual reality. Appearing to be supported by a high-tech Zimmer frame, computer scientist, John Airey uses a steer-able treadmill to progress on a walk- through tour of a virtual image of a church hall. As he paces on the real treadmill, so he moves towards the altar of the 3-D computer-generated image of the church. Such software packages would be invaluable to architects in judging how their designs may be received by the people who will use them, perhaps well in advance of any real foundations being laid.   • At an early-morning procedure at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA., Anthony M. DiGioia (center) uses HipNav, a computerized navigation system he developed in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon's Center for Medical Robotics and Computer-Assisted Surgery, to replace the hip of a 50-year-old Pittsburgh man. Aligning the new hip properly, DiGioia explains, is necessary to avoid surgical complications. Here DiGioia, a former robotics student, uses the intra-operative guidance system and a simple "aim and shoot" interface to emplace the new hip.   • Inukshuk (stone marker) above the town of Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada. An inukshuk is a stone landmark used as a milestone or directional marker by the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic.  The Arctic Circle, dominated by permafrost, has few natural landmarks and thus the inukshuk was central to navigation across the barren tundra.

  • Radio-controlled outdoor mobile platforms, Micro ATRV and ATRV-2, are produced by Real World Interface, part of iRobot of Somerville, MA. (ATRV stands for All-Terrain Robot Vehicle.) Their main purpose: to carry equipment in and out of areas difficult for human beings to navigate.   • Sweet Lips the robot guide takes visitors through the Hall of North American Wildlife, near the Dinosaur Hall in the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, PA. Carnegie Mellon University robotics professor Illah R. Nourbakhsh's creation draws children like a pied piper by speaking and playing informational videos on its screen. It navigates autonomously, using a locator system that detects colored squares mounted high on the wall. A color camera and scores of sonar, infrared, and touch sensors prevent Sweet Lips from crashing into museum displays or museum visitors.
