  • On Green Island, a former prison island off the coast of SE Taiwan where political prisoners were incarcerated and re-educated during the unnervingly recent White Terror. There's actually still a high-security prison on the island, but it only holds 200 inmates (actual felons, not polital prisoners), as opposed to the couple thousand of earlier decades..Now it's mostly a tourist destination. We visited in the off season in March, thereby avoiding the 5,000-10,000 tourists that inundate the little place daily, though, being the off season, we had to contend instead with intermittent cold rain and high winds.

Subhadra died last night at 8 p.m. and he and his sons brought her here to Varanasi for the funeral rite, arriving at 3 a.m..Mr. Singh says that his wife didn't want to be cremated and so he and their sons brought her here to the Ganges for a different funeral ritual then most others have.

The temples at Angkor are spread out over some 40 miles around the village of Siem Reap, about 192 miles from the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh. They were built between the eighth and 13th centuries and range from single towers made of bricks to vast stone temple complexes. Regarded as the supreme masterpiece of Khmer architecture, it is a huge pyramid temple built by Suryavarman II between 1113 and 1150. It is surrounded by a moat 570 feet wide and about four miles long. The bas-relief carvings are of the highest quality and the most beautifully executed in Angkor..

In 1986 the USSR Academy of Sciences allowed the NRDC to install seismic monitoring instruments within a few hundred kilometers of their nuclear test site to verify that the USSR was not testing nuclear weapons underground during the nuclear test ban. By allowing this monitoring on their soil and by monitoring near the Nevada test site in the USA, mutual trust was built that facilitated the end of the Cold War.   • In the Cambodian town of Siem Reap, the gateway to the ruins of Angkor Wat, an ingenious device is popular among the townspeople for catching crickets. A black light is hung above a plastic sheet that glows with an ultraviolet hue attractive to insects. The crickets are attracted to the light, land on the sheet, and slip down into a bucket of water, where they promptly drown. The Liemh family deep-fries the crickets and sells them in the local market for 6,000 riels, $2.50 US, per small basket.  Siem Reap, Cambodia. Iqaluit, with a population of 6,000, is the largest community in Nunavut as well as the capital city. It is located in the southeast part of Baffin Island. Formerly known as Frobisher Bay, the town is at the mouth of the bay of that name, overlooking Koojesse Inlet. "Iqaluit" means 'place of many fish'. The image is part of a collection of images and documentation for Hungry Planet 2, a continuation of work done after publication of the book project Hungry Planet: What the World Eats, by Peter Menzel & Faith D'Aluisio.

  • The Finken family's suburban straw bale home. They live a block-and-a-half east of Lac Deschênes in the city of Gatineau*, Quebec. The Finkens try to eat from the bounty of local farmers and producers to get the freshest food possible and grow some of their own summer and fall vegetables in raised beds in their front yard. They buy organic foods to the extent that they can afford the higher cost but they try to economize on staple foods. "At the bigger markets," says Kirk, "everything is so seductive that you end up spending more money (than you intended)".
