  • Marvin Minsky (born 1927), pioneering US computer and artificial intelligence scientist. Minsky studied at Harvard University before embarking on a distinguished career in artificial intelligence and robotics. In 1951 he designed and built with another colleague the first neural network-learning machine, modeled on human brain cells. He later founded the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and in 1985 co-founded MIT's Media Lab, where he now works as Toshiba Professor of Media Arts and Sciences.   • Portrait of American microbiologist Jonas Edward Salk (born 1914), inventor of the first polio vaccine. In 1949 a method of culturing the poliovirus was discovered, making quantities available for experimentation. Salk began to work on a method of killing the virus in such a way as to make it incapable of causing the disease, but capable of causing the production of antibodies which would be active against the living virus. By 1952 he had prepared a vaccine he dared try on humans. The trials were successful and in 1954 the mass production of the Salk vaccine began.   • Designed for government agencies, military, police, SWAT units, and security forces, the TRAP T-2 is a remotely operated rifle. In dangerous situations, lawmen could fire the tethered robotic gun from a position safely out of harm's way. Developed by Graham Hawkes, a successful independent inventor, the gun is powered by a backpack worn by the shooter. At a shooting range near Hawkes's office in Port Richmond, California, the $47,000 rifle fires with deadly accuracy; untroubled by nerves or fatigues, it calmly and tirelessly tracks and hits objects no bigger than a quarter.
