  • Rick Bumgardener, a self-taught gospel singer, guitar player, and lay preacher, sings an original song, ?Give Us Barabbas,? at his home in Halls, Tennessee while his dog, Bear lies at his feet.   • Pencil-sized robotic surgical instruments allow heart surgeons to perform operations through a centimeter-long hole in the patient's chest. Doctors insert robotic instruments through minute "ports" in the body. Instead of hovering over the operating table, surgeons sit at a console a few feet away, controlling the robo-scalpels with a pair of joysticklike grippers. Each tool has a patented EndoWrist mechanism that allows it to move with the dexterity and precision of the human hand. The whole ensemble was developed by the Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, CA, a nonprofit R&D center created by Stanford University.   • Pre-flight preparation of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO). This is a converted Lockheed C-141A Starlifter aircraft, operated by NASA since 1974. Its main instrument is a 90-cm infrared telescope. The KAO can cruise at up to 12,500 meters, well above most of the atmospheric water vapor that absorbs far infrared radiation and prevents ground-based far-IR astronomy. Here, the liquid nitrogen tanks in the rear of the aircraft are being filled, venting gas producing the cloud. Liquid nitrogen is used in the cryogenics system used to maintain the temperature of the KAO's instruments to within one degree of absolute zero (-273 Celsius). He won the 2003 Lemelson-MIT Prize for inventing "four instruments that have unlocked much of the mystery of human biology" by helping decode the genome. Hood also won the 2002 Kyoto Prize for Advanced Technology, and the 1987 Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research. In 1986 the USSR Academy of Sciences allowed the NRDC to install seismic monitoring instruments within a few hundred kilometers of their nuclear test site to verify that the USSR was not testing nuclear weapons underground during the nuclear test ban.   • Not long before going to Antarctica, William L. "Red" Whittaker took a rare moment off from his busy schedule to accompany Nomad, his meteorite-hunting robot, on a practice run. The robot spent Antarctica's summer of 2000 on the ice, hunting for meteorites. With its onboard instruments, Nomad found and classified five. (Visiting doctors watch surgeon Volkmar Falk perform a coronary artery bypass graft on a patient lying in the adjoining room, using a tele-manipulated surgical system (called a robotic system by some) designed by Intuitive Surgical Corporation of Mountainview, California, at the Herzzentrum, Leipzig, Germany. The assistant surgeon has incised small holes into the patient's chest wall through which the instruments-attached to sterile plastic covered manipulating arms-will pass and be telemanipulated by the surgeon in the next room. The room in which the surgeon is working is a less sterile work environment than that of the operating room where the patient lies. It is much like an office; phones are ringing, there is heavy foot traffic and personal conversation-at times at crescendo level.

  • This is the "iodine cell," a device developed and perfected by Butler, Marcy, and instrument specialist Steven Vogt of the University of California, Santa Cruz. When light from a star passes through the iodine, molecules in the hot vapor absorb parts of the light at very specific energies. Then, a specially etched slab of glass spreads the starlight into a glorious rainbow spectrum?like a prism held up to the sun, but with exquisitely fine detail. Because the iodine has subtracted bits of the light, a forest of dark black lines covers the spectrum like a long supermarket bar code. "It's like holding the star up to a piece of graph paper," McCarthy says. "The iodine lines never move. The Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) is a system of 10 radio telescopes controlled remotely from the Array Operations Center in Socorro, New Mexico. The antennas are spread across the United States from St. Croix in the Virgin Islands to Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii, making it the world's largest dedicated, full-time astronomical instrument..This antenna at Pie Town, New Mexico, is now linked with the Very Large Array via fiber optics.
