  • Mountain View, California.Vials of chemicals known as P.A.H. (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) luminesce in ultraviolet light. These molecules, naturally occuring throughout the depths of space, are believed by these and and other researchers to be possible origins of life on earth. P.A.H.s have been found to become chemically modified when surrounded by ice and exposed to ultraviolet radiation -- a situation likely to occur in space.iOnce molecularly altered, the modified P.A.H.s closely resemble known organic molicules that are found in abundance on earth. Thus P.A.H.s may be found to be the first stage in a chain of molecules that led to life on earth. Researchers at NASA/Ames are simulating the conditions in space in order to study these alterations in the molecular structure of P.A.H.s. They also track P.A.H.s as they travel through interstellar space towards developing solar systems where they may become transformed into the seeds of life, all to hypothesize about the origins of life on earth..[1999]

  • Paul Jefferson, a blind amputee in army hospital in England was wounded by a land mine in Kuwait. Paul Jefferson, who had overseen the de-mining of the Falklands. He had also written a manual on defusing Russian land mines. But he stepped on one and lost a leg, his eyes, and parts of his hands. Photographer Peter Menzel visited him in a veterans' hospital for the blind in England a few months later and made a short video on his rehabilitation and recollections of the accident. In this photo he is being taught to type with a computer program that sounds out the letters as he types them.

  • On Green Island, a former prison island off the coast of SE Taiwan where political prisoners were incarcerated and re-educated during the unnervingly recent White Terror. There's actually still a high-security prison on the island, but it only holds 200 inmates (actual felons, not polital prisoners), as opposed to the couple thousand of earlier decades..Now it's mostly a tourist destination. We visited in the off season in March, thereby avoiding the 5,000-10,000 tourists that inundate the little place daily, though, being the off season, we had to contend instead with intermittent cold rain and high winds.

Working in high winds with ambient temperature well over 100 degrees F, workers dressed in Nomex suits drank 10-20 liters of water a day. (July, 1991).

The fire has already been extinguished but the well is spewing oil and gas into the air under high pressure. The trick is to cut through the metal casing cleanly without causing any sparks that could reignite the well and incinerate the workers. The company was one of those brought in to fight the Kuwait oil well fires after the end of the Gulf War (July, 1991) More than 700 wells were set ablaze by retreating Iraqi troops creating the largest man-made environmental disaster in history.

  • Deception Island, off the Antarctic Peninsula.  organizing the kayaks to be launched near Pendulum Cove's thermal waters in Whaler's Bay, a protected harbor. Deception Island is the site of a circular flooded volcanic caldera. Conditions had to be perfect in order to kayak outside of the Bay, and they were. On the shore are rusting remains of Whaling operations (1911 to 1931) and the ruins of a WWII British base, Port Foster (1944-1967). Evacuated after a volcanic eruption, then closed permanently in 1969 after another eruption. Chinstrap penguins in the steam of the volcanics that are still warming the beach sand at Whaler's Bay.

Virtual reality headsets contain two screens in front of the eyes, both displaying a computer- generated environment such as a room or landscape. The screens show subtly different perspectives to create a 3-D effect. The headset responds to movements of the head, changing the view so that the user can look around. The computer monitor displays an image of one of Cyberspace's virtual (non-real) environments - a room - into which the player enters by wearing a headset & data glove. Two video images of the environment fit are projected into the eyes, whilst physical interaction is achieved through spatial sensors in the headset & optical fibers woven into the black rubber data glove, which send data to the computer on the player's position & movements in space. Here, Scott Delp and Scott Fisher are using a system developed at NASA's Ames Research Centre in Menlo Park, California, to study the anatomy of the human leg. They both wear a headset equipped with 3-D video displays to view the computer-generated graphical images - one is shown between the two doctors. Physical exploration of the leg anatomy is afforded by using the data glove, a black rubber glove with woven optical fiber sensors, which relays data on their physical hand movements back to the computer.   • Virtual reality: Rich Holloway wears prototype headset which employs half-silvered mirrors to enable the user to view a projected image of a virtual environment (and thus exist in virtual reality) and also see in front of his nose. A virtual environment is one created by a computer. A person entering such an environment does so with the aid of such a headset, which displays virtual imagery. Tactile interaction with the environment may be made using a data glove, a Spandex garment wired with sensors, which relays movement of the hand & fingers to the virtual environment. To pick up an object, Max Fischer (in control room), one of the hand's developers, uses the data-glove to transmit the motion of his hand to the robot. If he moves a finger, the robot moves the corresponding finger. Early work on remote-controlled robots foundered when the machines unwittingly crushed the objects they were manipulating.   • Three women dressed in black abayas and shielded from the hot desert sun in wide-brimmed straw hats called nakhls, and even gloves, tend goats near Shibam, on the edge of the Arabian Peninsula's Rub al Khali, or Empty Quarter. (From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets) This section of the Arabian Desert holds the world's largest stretch of sand. Further north into Saudi Arabia, this desert contains some of the world's richest oil and gas fields. Though modestly dressed, the women aren't adverse to throwing stones to keep their goats close by?or to keep strangers with cameras away.

  • Communicating with computers.  Richard Bolt.  Bolt is working on multi-modal interaction using speech, gesture, and gaze.  He is attempting to program computers to interact with their users by non-standard (keyboard, mouse) methods.  Using off the shelf hardware (cyber gloves, head-mounted eye-tracking gear, and magnetic space sensing cubes that are sewn into clothing), he and his students are creating systems whereby a user would not have to be skilled to interact with a computer.  He wants, "normal interaction with the machine--like you would with a human.  This will open the information highway to the world that cannot use computers."  His view of the future includes large screens, flat wall, or holographic screens which "spread-out information in space, like the real world." MODEL RELEASED.(1994)

Fictional Representation and Caption: Video phones and teledildactic interactive body gloves facilitated large numbers of long distance relationships among huge numbers of couples in an age where job mobility was crucial to financial well being. But as divorce rates grew, the interpersonal skills for maintaining relationships atrophied, and couples found it easier to have a virtual partner that had a physical presence in the bedroom. No more headaches, bad breath, receding hair or cellulite to worry about. With a "Honeymooner", robotic sex doll, programmable with a PC, all kinds of simulations are possible.
