Isaw (pig and chicken small-intestine barbecue) is a national favorite, as is taba (pieces of pork fat skewered onto a stick and deep-fried). Dugo is curdled and congealed pig blood, cut into chunks, skewered, and then grilled. Cow blood is too strong tasting to use, say the street vendors. Fortified storefronts are not unusual: most small sari-saris (variety/convenience shops, often just a window on the street) have similar rails, or bars, for security. Angelita's purchase is unusual: most people in this working-class area buy smaller amounts, handing in their money then getting their rice beneath the bars.   • Firefighters from the Kuwait Oil Company (called KWWK: Kuwait Wild Well Killers) pray at noon by the first oil well fire they were working on in Iraq's Rumeilah Oil Field. They did a double prayer at noon so they would not have to stop later in the day if they were at a critical phase. Later in the day they extinguished this smoky fire and the next day stopped the flow of gas and oil with drilling mud using what is called a "stinger", a tapered pipe on the end of a long steel boom controlled by a bulldozer. Bashofu weaving was a home-based craft, and highly valued, but there are few, if any, weavers producing the fabric at home anymore. The workshop of Toshiko Taira, 87, and her daughter, in the northern Okinawa village of Kijoka, is virtually all that is left of the art. She has been named a national treasure of Japan. She and her daughter are attempting to keep the fine practice alive. Although older generations of Okinawans are still living into their one-hundredth year, some say that the decline of weaving in the home was the beginning of the decline of the lengthy life spans of Okinawans.

  • Preparing boondi in Ujjain, India, at one of the camps at the Kumbh Mela site. Every camp had its own large/small kitchen where food is prepared for people residing in that particular camp as well as outsiders who would walk in and out for lunch/dinner. Boondi can be a savory preparation or even sweet. A thin consistency dough is prepared using gram flour, water and spices. The man is pouring this dough through a big iron sieve which has holes in it so the dough falls in the form of drops in the hot oil and this is then fried. What comes out is the savory boondi.
