  • Mana La, a Hawaiian entry owned by hair product millionaire John Paul Mitchell for the Pentax Solar Car Race, the first international solar- powered car race. The event began in Darwin, Northern Territories on November 1st, 1987 and finished in Adelaide, South Australia. Mana La was designed to utilize wind as well as solar energy. General Motors' entry, Sunraycer, was the eventual winner, taking 5 1/2 days to complete the 1,950 miles, traveling at an average speed of 41.6 miles per hour. (Paul Mitchell)  (1987)

  • Burton Richter (b.1931), Director of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), photographed during the construction of the Stanford Linear Collider in 1986. Richter won the 1976 Nobel Prize for Physics, following his discovery of the Psi- particle at the SLAC in 1974. The Prize was shared with Sam Ting of Brookhaven National Laboratory. The discovery of the Psi- particle also implied the existence of two new quarks, Charm and anti- Charm. Richter has been at SLAC since 1964, having also designed the PEP positron-electron storage ring at Stanford. The L-3 experiment is part of CERN's Large Electron- Positron Collider (LEP), inaugurated on 13 November 1989. L3 is one of 4 giant particle detectors at the LEP Collider. LEP collides electrons & positrons accelerated to an energy of 50 GeV in a circular tunnel 100m underground & 27km in circumference. L3 is a cylindrical assembly of many types of apparatus - hadron & electromagnetic calorimeters, drift chambers, & a time projection chamber - which fit together, like layers of an onion around the point where the particles collide. Many of the components scattered over his desk are simple, cheap, and (by contemporary standards) primitive; many are ripped from junked tape decks, cameras, and VCRs.   • Oswaldo Gutierrez (center), Chief of the PDVSA Oil Platform GP 19 in Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, monitors operations with his colleagues on an oil rig. (From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) The caloric value of his day's worth of food on a day in December was 6000 kcals. He is 52; 5'7" and 220 pounds. Gutierrez works on the platform for seven days then is off at home for seven days.   While on the platform he runs on its helipad, practices karate, lifts weights, and jumps rope to keep fit. His food for the seven days comes from the platform cafeteria which, though plagued with cockroaches, turns out food choices that run from healthful to greasy-fried. Fresh squeezed orange juice is on the menu as well and Gutierrez drinks three liters of it a day himself. His diet changed about ten years ago when he decided that he'd rather be more fit than fat like many of his platform colleagues. PDVSA is the state oil company of Venezuela.

Shibata is a roboticist who studied with MIT robot guru Rodney Brooks before heading his own lab. Omron, a Japanese engineering company, applied Shibata's discoveries to produce Tama, a mechanical pet with sensors beneath its fur that react to sound and touch.
