  • Mohammad Riahi, a part time restaurant manager and taxi driver eats breakfast with his family at their home in the city of Yazd, Iran.  (Mohammad Riahi is one of the people interviewed for the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.)  He lives with his father and mother, and will until he marries. Even then, he and his bride will be offered the second floor of his parent's home. At the restaurant he eats whatever he feels like eating. At home though, he eats what his mother puts on the tablecloth on the floor in the middle of their living room. Many of their meals are vegetable and starch-based although they have lamb or chicken occasionally, and sheep's head soup on the weekend. As Muslims, they never eat pork.

Fictional Representation and Caption: Statistics and cultural studies always harked that families who dine "ensemble" have much better relations than those who do not. The time-honored tradition of families eating together fell by the wayside by the end of the 20th century. In the time-starved 21st century, families re-instituted the practice, but with a twist. They ritualistically eat together but are nearly all multi-tasking at the same time. But they can and often do interact with new half-mirrored goggles "I-GOGS" that allow virtually any computer/TV/school/ or video game program to be played at any time. Mealtime became an opportunity to share data as well as food.   • Maddox Dairy in Riverdale, California. Dairy Cows eating surplus oranges, ground up for cattle feed. The Maddox family owns and operates three different locations: Maddox Dairy, RuAnn Dairy and Golden Genes. Maddox Dairy is currently home to 3500 milking cows, calves, heifers and bulls. The dairy is a "birth to milking operation", with four, double-12, pregnant herringbone-milking parlors, free stall barns, calf raising barn and calving facilities. The dairy does their own embryo transfer work and markets their genetics worldwide. The Maddox Dairy was honored in 2001 with the Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder award for being a "Visionary Holstein Breeder", having bred more than 330 Gold Medal Dams, 502 Excellent cows, and their advancements in gene research for the Dairy industry. .In Visalia, California, surplus whole naval oranges are fed to dairy cattle. Other surplus oranges are chopped up and dried in the sun for cattle feed by Sungro Co. near Bakersfield, California.

The island has been the focus in recent years of researchers trying to discover why a disproportionately large number of Okinawans are living to age 100 or more. Millie, a vegan, has a thirst for alternative medicine and homeopathic healing, as well as a deep interest in how her diet affects her body. She has practiced Shivambu (sometimes spelled Sivambu), which is the drinking of one's own first morning urine (200 cc in her practice) as a curative and preventative measure, for over 15 years. Millie applies urine to her skin as well, for the same reasons. Her husband Abhik has tried Shivambu and she helped her children to practice it when they were young, but currently only Millie practices urine therapy.
