  • Titan Missile Museum, Green Valley, Arizona. When the SALT Treaty called for the de-activation of the 18 Titan missile silos that ring Tucson, volunteers at the Pima Air Museum asked if one could be retained for public tours. After much negotiation, including additional talks with SALT officials, the Green Valley complex of the 390th Strategic Missile Wing was opened to the public. Deep in the ground, behind a couple of 6,000 pound blast doors is the silo itself. The 110 foot tall missile weighed 170 tons when it was fueled and ready to fly.

  • The Holy Land Experience is a Christian theme park in Orlando, Florida. The theme park recreates the architecture and themes of the ancient city of Jerusalem in 1st century Israel. The Holy Land Experience was founded and built by Marvin Rosenthal, a Jewish born Baptist minister but is now owned by the Trinity Broadcasting Network. Rosenthal is also the chief executive of a ministry devoted to 'reaching the Jewish people for the Messiah' called Zion's Hope. Beside the theme park architectural recreations, there are church services and live presentations of biblical stories, most notably a big stage production featuring the life of Jesus. There are several restaurants and gift shops in the theme park. The staff dresses in biblical costumes. Admission is $40 for adults and $25 for youths, aged 6-18.

  • During chilly mornings and evenings in northern Namibia's rainy season, the women of Okapembambu village draw steaming buckets of milk from their cows, despite the distraction of ankle-deep mud and manure. (From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) Milk and its by-products are the Himba's most important source of nutrition. The women add a bit of soured milk to the fresh liquid to hasten the process of natural fermentation, and they shake calabash gourds for hours to make butter. They drink some of the soured milk, use some to make their cornmeal porridge, and mix butterfat with ochre to make their body cream.

  • Noolkisaruni Tarakuai, the third of four wives of a Maasai chief, milks a drought-stricken cow at her home near Narok, Kenya, and is able to draw only a half cup of milk.   • First generation AIBO robot pet. Although they say it is only a robotic pet, the Nozue family in Yokohama acts like it is a member of the family. This is especially true of Mr. Nozue. During our two-hour Sunday morning visit, the family began by explaining that they had bought the Aibo through a nationwide lottery draw. They had wanted a real dog but their apartment building rules do not allow real pets so Mr. Nozue accessed the Sony site from work and applied for the lottery. His wife, Yoshini, says she never expected that they would actually buy the robotic pet because of the expense involved, they paid $2,500. AIBO is Japanese for buddy.   • Sweet Lips the robot guide takes visitors through the Hall of North American Wildlife, near the Dinosaur Hall in the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, PA. Carnegie Mellon University robotics professor Illah R. Nourbakhsh's creation draws children like a pied piper by speaking and playing informational videos on its screen. It navigates autonomously, using a locator system that detects colored squares mounted high on the wall. A color camera and scores of sonar, infrared, and touch sensors prevent Sweet Lips from crashing into museum displays or museum visitors.
