  • The Hewlett-Packard Garage at 367 Addison Avenue in Palo Alto, California. This is California Historic Landmark 976. This garage is the birthplace of the world's first high-technology region, 'Silicon Valley'. The idea for such a region originated with Dr. Frederick Terman, a Stanford University Professor who encouraged his students to start up their own electronics companies in the area rather than joining established firms in the East. The first two students to follow his advice were William R. Hewlett and David Packard, who in 1938 began developing their first product, an audio oscillator, in this garage. (1999).

These compounds are delivered to the vomeronasal organ (VNO) that in turn affects the hypothalamus and the limbic system. The human VNO is linked to the hypothalamus and limbic areas, which enables Pherin to develop therapeutic drugs targeted against a variety of medical conditions associated with these brain regions such as mood disorders, neuro-endocrine function, body weight management, body temperature, sexual motivation, water and salt balance, blood pressure, and sugar and fat metabolism. .The vomeronasal organ (VNO) or Jacobson's organ is an auxiliary olfactory sense organ in some tetrapods. In adults, it is located in the vomer bone, between the nose and the mouth. Anatomical studies demonstrate that in humans the vomeronasal organ regresses during fetal development, as is the case with some other mammals, including other apes, cetaceans, and some bats. There is no evidence of a neural connection between the organ and the brain in adult humans. Nevertheless, a small pit can be found in the nasal septum of some people, and some researchers have argued that this pit represents a functional vomeronasal organ. Thus, its possible presence in humans remains controversial.

  • Sewer inspection robot. Kurt I, a sewer inspection robot prototype. Here, the robot is moving through a simulated sewer at a German government-owned research and development centre. Unlike its predecessors, the Kurt I, and its successor, Kurt II, are cable-less, autonomous robots, which have their own power supply and piloting system. Kurt uses two low-powered lasers (upper centre) to beam a grid (red, lower centre) into its path. When the gridlines curve, indicating a bend or intersection in the pipe, the robot matches the curves against a digital map in its computer. It will then pilot itself to its destination. Every summer, throngs of just-graduated high school students invade Surfers Paradise, as this beach 30 miles southeast of the city is known. Fictional Representation and Caption: The Smith's of Vallejo, California were not certain that the latest hi-tech form of giving their (unborn) child a headstart was effective, but it sure was fun to see Junior react to their voice on his "fetalfone". It was true that the youngster could only use it to listen (even if he could talk, it would very difficult in the amniotic fluid), but they enjoyed the idea that their offspring would be comfortable with a cell phone from Day Minus-90 to Day One when he popped out. The flat screen imaging unit affords the parents (and in this case older sister) the opportunity to track the unborn's development and also watch his reactions when they talk to him on the "Fetalfone".   • The modest premises of Trans Time Inc., a cryonics company in Oakland, California. Cryonics is a speculative life support technology that seeks to preserve human life in a state that will be viable and treatable by future medicine. Cryonics involves the freezing of whole human bodies, organs or pet cats & dogs, to await a future thaw & a potential second opportunity to live. A recently dead body would be frozen in stages, firstly down to -110 degrees Fahrenheit (using dry ice) and then down to -320 F (in liquid nitrogen). During this process, blood is replaced with a substitute mixed with glycerol, to prevent formation of ice crystals. Intracellular ice formation causes severe damage to organs & tissues, and is a major obstacle in the mainstream development of cryobiology science. MODEL RELEASED 1988.

The Kericho district in the Great Rift Valley has rich volcanic soil, cool air, and a moist tropical climate that's perfect for growing tea. With its popular tea brand Lipton, Unilever has helped make Kenya the number one exporter of black tea in the world. Since the evergreen tea bushes are picked every 14 to 17 days year-round, there is constant work for pickers. They're paid by the kilo of tea leaves and a field foreman reported that they can earn between $3 and $9 (USD) per day. To compete with Unilever and James Finlay, another huge corporate tea producer in Kenya, the Kenya Tea Development Agency represents half a million small-scale tea growers throughout Kenya.

Kitano, a senior researcher at Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc. and director of this government-funded project, wants to endow SIG with sufficient eyesight, hearing, and processing power to follow instructions given by several people in a crowd. The goal is ambitious, but Kitano is well-placed to achieve it.   • In the water, pike can accelerate at a rate of eight to twelve g's, as fast as a NASA rocket. To scientists, the speed is inexplicable. In an attempt to understand how the flap of a thin fish tail can push a fish faster than any propeller, John Kumph, then an MIT graduate student, built a robotic version of a chain-pickerel?a species of pike?with a spring-wound fiberglass exoskeleton and a skin made of silicone rubber. Now under further development by iRobot, an MIT-linked company just outside Boston in Somerville, MA, the robo-fish can't yet swim nearly as fast as a real pike, suggesting how much remains to be learned. Formally designated as the Manhattan Engineering District (MED), it refers specifically to the period of the project from 1942-1946 under the control of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, under the administration of General Leslie R. Groves, with its scientific research directed by the American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. The project succeeded in developing and detonating three nuclear weapons in 1945: a test detonation on July 16 (the Trinity test) near Alamogordo, New Mexico; an enriched uranium bomb code-named "Little Boy" detonated on August 6 over Hiroshima, Japan; and a plutonium bomb code-named "Fat Man" on August 9 over Nagasaki, Japan.
