  • Hungarian-born American physicist Edward Teller, who is best known as "the father of the hydrogen bomb". Seen here at his home in Stanford, California. Born in 1908, he obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Leipzig. He left Europe in the 1930s because of the Nazi threat. During World War II he worked at Los Alamos on the development of the atom bomb. In the late 1940s & early 1950s he championed development of the H-bomb & achieved the crucial technical breakthrough that made the bomb possible.   • Control Center of the Titan Missile Museum, Green Valley, Arizona. When the SALT Treaty called for the de-activation of the 18 Titan missile silos that ring Tucson, volunteers at the Pima Air Museum asked if one could be retained for public tours. After much negotiation, including additional talks with SALT officials, the Green Valley complex of the 390th Strategic Missile Wing was opened to the public. On display is a 110 foot tall missile, which weighed 170 tons when it was fueled and ready to fly.

Turco is seen here at the Nuclear Winter test fire: where a canyon outside Los Angeles was deliberately set on fire to study the potential climatic effects of a nuclear war. The nuclear winter theory predicts that smoke from fires burning after a nuclear war would block sunlight, causing a rapid drop in temperature that would trigger serious ecological disturbance. The test burn took place in December 1986 on 500 acres of brush in Lodi Canyon, Los Angeles. Dripping napalm from a helicopter ignited the fire. Ground-based temperature sensors were used to study soil erosion. Various airborne experiments included smoke sampling & high-altitude infrared imaging from a converted U-2 spy plane.

The nuclear winter theory predicts that smoke from fires burning after a nuclear war would block sunlight, causing a rapid drop in temperature that would trigger serious ecological disturbance. The test burn took place in December 1986 on 500 acres of brush in Lodi Canyon, Los Angeles. Dripping napalm from a helicopter ignited the fire. Each year the site is open to the public for one day.   • A Defense Department specialist in a radiation suit on the Nuclear Test Site in the Nevada desert outside Las Vegas holds a Geiger counter during a simulated nuclear weapons accident test. In the "Broken Arrow" (any accident involving a nuclear weapon) exercise, the Defense Department and the Department of Energy simulated the crash of a helicopter carrying nuclear weapons. Various agencies and departments then practiced coordinating their responses in an effort to find and clean up the mess. Photographed in one of the original boy's camp lodges in Los Alamos, New Mexico, (1988) The Manhattan Project refers to the effort during World War II by the United States, in collaboration with the United Kingdom, Canada, and other European physicists, to develop the first nuclear weapons. Formally designated as the Manhattan Engineering District (MED), it refers specifically to the period of the project from 1942-1946 under the control of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, under the administration of General Leslie R. Groves, with its scientific research directed by the American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. The project succeeded in developing and detonating three nuclear weapons in 1945. MODEL RELEASED

The accelerator was part of the Reagan White House project for a space-based accelerator that could produce a high-energy, uncharged particle beam that might examine, disarm, & even destroy distant objects (such as ballistic missiles), as part of America's Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) - the "Star Wars" program.   • Wild flower and trinitite. Trinitite is a metamorphic rock found in New Mexico. It was formed during the explosion of the world's first nuclear bomb, code-named Trinity, on 16 July 1945. Trinitite is an altered silicate resembling rough green glass. The extreme temperatures of the nuclear explosion melted the native sandstone soil. As the material cooled it formed a glassy structure. The greenish color comes from iron in the sand - the same iron, which as an oxide gave the original sand its reddish color. Most of the original radioactivity of the trinitite has gone in the last decades. First atomic bomb test site. (1984).

Dead brown tree snakes are draped on it..There are no birds on the Pacific Island of Guam thanks to the Brown Tree Snake. Hungry egg-eating tree snakes have overrun the tropical island after arriving on a lumber freighter from New Guinea during World War II. Besides wiping out the bird population, Brown Tree Snakes cause frequent power outages: they commit short circuit suicide when climbing between power lines. These snakes were electrocuted causing a power outage from 1 to 7 AM on May 19.

  • Sunraycer, General Motors' entry for the Pentax Solar Car Race, the first international solar-powered car race, which began in Darwin, Northern Territories on November 1st, 1987 and finished in Adelaide, South Australia. Sunraycer is shown here on the 3rd day of the race, moving along a dead straight section of the Stuart Highway (Route 87) in the outback 100 km south of Devil's Marbles passing the skeleton of a kangaroo. Sunraycer was the eventual winner, taking 5 1/2 days to complete the 1,950 miles, traveling at an average speed of 41.6 miles per hour. Sunraycer's power source was an array of 7,200 photovoltaic cells, joined to form a hood over the top and back of the vehicle. (1987)

Fictional Representation and Caption: Interactive gravestones became quite popular in the 21st century. Adding snippets of video of the diseased was quite easy to program since nearly every family had extensively documented their family time with small digital videocams. AI (artificial intelligence) computer programs made conversations with the dead quite easy. These virtual visits to the underworld became passé within a decade however, and graveyard visits became less common. By mid-century many people wanted to insure that their relatives would continue paying their respects, and keeping their memory alive. New technology insured regular visits to the gravesite to pick up a monthly inheritance check issued electronically by a built-in device with wireless connection to the living relative's bank account. Face recognition (and retinal scanners on high-end models) insured that family members were present during the half-hour visits. A pressure pad at the foot of the grave activated the system and after 30 minutes of kneeling at the grave, watching videos or prerecorded messages or admonitions, a message flashed on the screen, indicating that a deposit had been made electronically to their bank account. For the Wright family of Napa, California, there is no other way to collect Uncle Eno's inheritance other than by monthly kneelings.   • Villagers inspect the carcass of a cow they slaughtered after it swallowed more than 10 kilograms of plastic bags and became critically bloated in a village near Narouk, Kenya.  This discovery came at the cost of two cattle in a culture that values livestock highly. In the dry, near desert conditions of drought stricken Kenya, discarded plastic bags are eaten by cows while grazing. Here the dead calf is removed from the birth sack. Maasai wealth is derived from the cattle owned, the land, and the number of children born to support the family busines, which is cattle and goats.
