  • FIRST CONTACT: "FETALFONE" Photo Illustration for the Future of Communication GEO (Germany) Special Issue. Fictional Representation and Caption: The Smith's of Vallejo, California were not certain that the latest hi-tech form of giving their (unborn) child a headstart was effective, but it sure was fun to see Junior react to their voice on his "fetalfone". It was true that the youngster could only use it to listen (even if he could talk, it would very difficult in the amniotic fluid), but they enjoyed the idea that their offspring would be comfortable with a cell phone from Day Minus-90 to Day One when he popped out. The flat screen imaging unit affords the parents (and in this case older sister) the opportunity to track the unborn's development and also watch his reactions when they talk to him on the "Fetalfone". [Fetus with "Fetalfone" shown on "Babewatch", fetus-scan home imaging system can be monitored by absent parent via Internet.] MODEL RELEASED.

  • Raw food at Bruno Comby's hotel and restaurant outside of Paris, France. Guests staying at the Chateau Montrame smell a number of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, nuts, and insects (all raw) before eating as much of them as they feel comfortable doing. Bruno Comby, author of "Delicious Insects" (in French) lives and works in the Orkos Institute in the 17th century Chateau Montrame. His institute serves a raw diet he calls "instinctology" and describes as the Paleolithic nutritional practice by early human hunter-gatherer ancestors. Comby grows insects in cages for food. • The Soviet-style apartment blocks on the edge of Ulaanbaatar, a legacy of Mongolia's Communist past, are now surrounded by squatters; more accurately, urban homesteaders. Former nomads, they have precisely parceled out the land and staked out their neat gers. The gers lack indoor plumbing, but in other ways are more comfortable than the city's crowded apartments. Hungry Planet: What the World Eats (p. 228). This image is featured alongside the Batsuuri family images in Hungry Planet: What the World Eats.

  • Intended for surveillance, Urbie is a low-profile, remotely operated machine that crawls over obstacles on bulldozer-like tracks, beaming images of what it sees to its operators. The robot is intended to be exceptionally durable, capable of flipping over and surviving shocks that would destroy most other robots. In a simulated rapid-deployment mission from the comfort of a car, iRobot researcher Tom Frost guides Urbie up a flight of steps in Somerville, MA. From the book Robo sapiens: Evolution of a New Species, page 147.
