Fictional Representation and Caption: The Smith's of Vallejo, California were not certain that the latest hi-tech form of giving their (unborn) child a headstart was effective, but it sure was fun to see Junior react to their voice on his "fetalfone". It was true that the youngster could only use it to listen (even if he could talk, it would very difficult in the amniotic fluid), but they enjoyed the idea that their offspring would be comfortable with a cell phone from Day Minus-90 to Day One when he popped out. The flat screen imaging unit affords the parents (and in this case older sister) the opportunity to track the unborn's development and also watch his reactions when they talk to him on the "Fetalfone". These compounds are delivered to the vomeronasal organ (VNO) that in turn affects the hypothalamus and the limbic system. The human VNO is linked to the hypothalamus and limbic areas, which enables Pherin to develop therapeutic drugs targeted against a variety of medical conditions associated with these brain regions such as mood disorders, neuro-endocrine function, body weight management, body temperature, sexual motivation, water and salt balance, blood pressure, and sugar and fat metabolism. .The vomeronasal organ (VNO) or Jacobson's organ is an auxiliary olfactory sense organ in some tetrapods. In adults, it is located in the vomer bone, between the nose and the mouth. Anatomical studies demonstrate that in humans the vomeronasal organ regresses during fetal development, as is the case with some other mammals, including other apes, cetaceans, and some bats. There is no evidence of a neural connection between the organ and the brain in adult humans. Nevertheless, a small pit can be found in the nasal septum of some people, and some researchers have argued that this pit represents a functional vomeronasal organ. Thus, its possible presence in humans remains controversial.

  • As Mark Tilden's Spyder 1.0 approaches like a tiny but menacing arachnid, its circuits try to optimize actions, walking in this case, with minimal energy. Perturbed by the environment, its patented "nervous net" seeks the minimum state, its legs moving almost randomly until it succeeds. In 1990, Spyder 1.0 was the first walking robot to use Tilden's nervous net control system. Roszak spoke at the conference on a panel discussion on "The Case Against Computers: A Systematic Critique" with Jerry Mander of the Elmwood Institute and Richard Sclove. This portrait is in his office at Cal State, Hayward. Roszak has written a number of books, including The Making of the Counterculture, the book that named a generation. .   • Alternative Energy: Mesquite Lake Cattle Manure Power Plant, California. The Mesquite Lake Resource Recovery Project is the world's first cattle manure-fired, commercial scale power plant. The plant burns cattle manure from nearby feedlots. The manure was becoming a serious waste problem because it was of limited value as a fertilizer in the area. In many cases, feedlot owners had to pay to have the manure removed. At Mesquite Lake, this waste material is burned and the heat generates steam, which drives a turbine/generator and produces about 17 megawatts of electrical power. After supplying plant needs, 14-15 megawatts are sold to Southern California Edison. This is enough power to supply the needs of a community of about 15,000 to 20,000 homes. (1990).

  • (1992) NYPD Crime Scene Unit responding to a possible homicide/rape of a 49-year-old white woman in her apartment in Flushing, New York. She was attacked in the kitchen, carried into the bedroom, tied and then stabbed 31 times. Detective Arnie Roussine and Kim Geis are seen using a forensic laser "Omniprint 1000" to look for traces of sperm on the bloody sheets at the foot of the bed.   • (1992) Forensic use of DNA fingerprints. A scientist taking a sample from a bloodstained pair of jeans. DNA from the sample is then sequenced, providing a DNA fingerprint (such as those seen at the edges of the frame). This may then be compared with DNA from the victim and any suspect. In some cases, this may be used in conjunction with other evidence to positively link a suspect with both the victim and the scene of a crime.
