  • Exemplifying the attempts by Japanese researchers to put a friendly face on their robots, DB's creators are teaching it the Kacha-shi, an Okinawan folk dance. Unlike most robots, DB did not acquire the dance by being programmed. Instead, it observed human dancers?project researchers, actually, and repeatedly attempted to mimic their behavior until it was successful. Project member Stefan Schaal, a neurophysicist at the University of Southern California (in red shirt), believes that by means of this learning process robots will ultimately develop a more flexible intelligence. Firefighters from the Kuwait Oil Company (called KWWK: Kuwait Wild Well Killers) pray at noon by the first oil well fire they were working on in Iraq's Rumaila Oil field. Later in the day they extinguished this smoky fire and the next day stopped the flow of gas and oil with drilling mud using what is called a "stinger," a tapered pipe on the end of a long steel boom controlled by a bulldozer.   • The sacred Jain site of Sravanbelgola, 93km north of Mysore, consists of two hills and a large Tank. On one of the hills, Indragiri (also known as Vindhyagiri), stands an extraordinary eighteen meter high monolithic statue of a naked  male figure, Gomateshvara, which is the largest freestanding sculpture in India. The name of the other hill is Chandragiri, marking the arrival of Jainism in southern India.

  • Solar energy: SEGS Solar Plant. Southern California Desert. Solar power. One of the three Luz International solar energy complexes in the Mojave Desert of California, USA. Together these sites, which cover 1000 acres, generate 275 megawatts of electricity, 90% of the world's total grid-connected solar energy production. This installation, located at Kramer Junction, has an array of 650,000 computer-controlled parabolic mirrors which track the sun across the sky, focusing it's light onto tubes containing a synthetic oil. The oil, which is thus super-heated to 391 degrees Centigrade, is used to boil water for steam turbine generators in one of five power plants. (1985).

  • Alternative Energy: Mesquite Lake Cattle Manure Power Plant, California. The Mesquite Lake Resource Recovery Project is the world's first cattle manure-fired, commercial scale power plant. The plant burns cattle manure from nearby feedlots. The manure was becoming a serious waste problem because it was of limited value as a fertilizer in the area. In many cases, feedlot owners had to pay to have the manure removed. At Mesquite Lake, this waste material is burned and the heat generates steam, which drives a turbine/generator and produces about 17 megawatts of electrical power. After supplying plant needs, 14-15 megawatts are sold to Southern California Edison. This is enough power to supply the needs of a community of about 15,000 to 20,000 homes. (1990).

  • Antipodean dinosaur hunting. Paleontologist Tom Rich holds the skull (in his right hand) and part of the tail of a fossil hypsolophodontid. This was a small dinosaur, about the size of a large chicken, living in the Cretaceous Period about 100 million years BP (before present). The specimen was found at Dinosaur Cove, southern Australia. Examination of the skull indicates that the creature had a large cerebral optic lobe, which suggests that it had some capacity for adapting to darkness. This becomes relevant when considering that it would have lived between 65 and 80 degrees south latitude, and would therefore have had to endure some length of permanent night in winter.
