As transportation became more efficient (especially refrigerated transport), and farms became huge, big corporations moved into the food business to take advantage of scale, especially in the United States. Now the convenience of one-stop shopping has made this business even bigger. Even the smaller supermarkets are being bought up or run out of business by the larger concerns. Some small town markets still exist today throughout much of Europe, although to a lesser degree there as well. Small markets are still the lifeblood of communities in the developing world, and, for better or worse, will remain so until they are numerous and big enough to attract the conglomerates' attention. Coming full circle, farmers markets have come back into vogue in some places in the USA where they had largely disappeared.

  • RADON CURE: Defunct gold and uranium mines south of Helena, Montana, attract ailing tourists, who bask in radioactive radon gas and drink radioactive water to improve their health. Each summer, hundreds of people, come to the radon health mines to relax and treat arthritis, lupus, asthma and other chronic cripplers. Visitor Ralph Clark at the Merry Widow Mine, which is a tunnel into the mountain, with a temperature that remains around 60 degrees in both winter and summer. The typical vacation at the Merry Widow Health Mine lasts anywhere from a week to two weeks and visitors are recommended to sit in the mine two or three times a day. Visitors also soak their feet in the freezing cold mineral waters or drink the mine water, which they claim is very productive to good health. The water at the Merry Widow Mine has been tested by the State Health Department and found to be pure for drinking purposes. The mineshaft touts radon levels as much as 175 times the federal safety standard for houses. The permitted total visit is determined by the radiation level of the particular mine. The average visitor is 72 years old. The mines appeal to "plain people," such as the Amish or the Mennonites, because of the "natural" healing aspects, the lack of commercialization, and the relatively low cost-per-hour for treatment sessions. She is 37 years of age; 5 feet, 3 inches tall and 119 pounds. With no tables or chairs or stove, Ermelinda cooks all the family's meals while kneeling over the hearth on the earthen floor, tending an open fire of sticks and straw. Guinea pigs that skitter about looking for scraps or spilled grain will eventually end up on the fire themselves when the family eats them for a holiday treat. Because there is no chimney, the beams and thatch roof are blackened by smoke. Unvented smoke from cooking fires accounts for a high level of respiratory disease and, in one study in rural Ecuador, was accountable for half of infant mortality.  MODEL RELEASED.

He knows where all of the best Indian and Pakistani restaurants are throughout Chicago, but prefers his wife's home cooking above all. His favorites? ?Kebabs, chicken tika, or biryani?spicy food,? he says. The Bodies arrive day and night from far and near to be cremated at Jalasi Ghat, the cremation grounds at Manikarnika Ghat. One hundred or more times a day male family members carry a loved one’s body through the narrow streets on a bamboo litter to the Ganges River shore—a place of pilgrimage for Hindus during life, and at death. Not every Hindu can be cremated here, because of transportation costs and logistical considerations. Sometimes a body is burned in one location and the ashes brought to Varanasi. There are other rivers in India, such as the Shipra which flows through the sacred city of Ujjain, that are considered sacred as well, but none holds the importance of the Ganges. Sometimes a small dummy representing the person will be burned at Jalasi.<br />
Only male family members are present and tend to the bodies at the cremation site as no show of emotion is allowed and also, they don’t want any of them jumping onto the fire, says one manager at the ghat. The body is carried to the water’s edge for a last dip, and then the main mourner prepares for his role in the ritual burning.<br />
The main mourner—usually the eldest son or closest male family member’s hair and facial hair is shorn, and his nails are cut. He wears a simple dhoti (traditional Indian male’s wraparound clothing). The chief mourner follows a prescribed ritual, which involves circling the body and showering it with ghee (clarified butter) and incense—like sandalwood—again often purchased from one of the local funereal accessories vendors. It takes about three hours for an average sized body to burn completely. If a family is poor and doesn’t have enough money to buy the right amount of wood to burn the body, then wood left over from other fires might be used. It takes about 350 kilos of wood to burn a body completely.<br />

Fictional Representation and Caption: Interactive gravestones became quite popular in the 21st century. Adding snippets of video of the diseased was quite easy to program since nearly every family had extensively documented their family time with small digital videocams. AI (artificial intelligence) computer programs made conversations with the dead quite easy. These virtual visits to the underworld became passé within a decade however, and graveyard visits became less common. By mid-century many people wanted to insure that their relatives would continue paying their respects, and keeping their memory alive. New technology insured regular visits to the gravesite to pick up a monthly inheritance check issued electronically by a built-in device with wireless connection to the living relative's bank account. Face recognition (and retinal scanners on high-end models) insured that family members were present during the half-hour visits. A pressure pad at the foot of the grave activated the system and after 30 minutes of kneeling at the grave, watching videos or prerecorded messages or admonitions, a message flashed on the screen, indicating that a deposit had been made electronically to their bank account.   • João Agustinho Cardoso, fishes in a shallow lake near the Solimoes River in Manacapuru, Brazil. (Featured in the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) The caloric value of his day's worth of food for a typical day in the month of November was 5200 kcals. He is 69 years of age; 5 feet 2.5 inches tall and 140 pounds.  João's new house has no electricity and the toilet is simply the end of the big balsa wood logs the house is floating on. There is, however, running water, and plenty of it, in the half-mile-wide branch of the river they live on. Unfortunately the water is not potable, but it is teeming with fish, including piranha, which can make swimming during the early morning or evening worrisome. The curimata in the photo is just one of dozens of species that makes its way onto João's table. Absent from his daily diet are any alcoholic or caffeinated beverages, eschewed by his Seventh-day Adventist religion.  MODEL RELEASED.

  • Three women dressed in black abayas and shielded from the hot desert sun in wide-brimmed straw hats called nakhls, and even gloves, tend goats near Shibam, on the edge of the Arabian Peninsula's Rub al Khali, or Empty Quarter. (From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets) This section of the Arabian Desert holds the world's largest stretch of sand. Further north into Saudi Arabia, this desert contains some of the world's richest oil and gas fields. Though modestly dressed, the women aren't adverse to throwing stones to keep their goats close by?or to keep strangers with cameras away.

She is 37 years of age 5 feet, 3 inches and 119 pounds. With no tables or chairs, Ermelinda cooks all the family's meals while kneeling over the hearth on the earthen floor, tending an open fire of sticks and straw. Guinea pigs that skitter about looking for scraps or spilled grain will eventually end up on the fire themselves when the family eats them for a holiday treat. Because there is no chimney, the beams and thatch roof are blackened by smoke. Unvented smoke from cooking fires accounts for a high level of respiratory disease and, in one study in rural Ecuador, was accountable for half of infant mortality.

  • Borrowing from Star Wars, engineers at NASA's Ames Research Center, just south of San Francisco, CA, are developing a personal assistant robot that can hover over an astronaut's shoulder in space, or work at the direction of an astronaut in situations too dangerous for a human. Floating weightlessly, the machine could have many uses: patrolling corridors for gas leaks, reminding astronauts about the tasks on their to-do lists, or serving as a communication link when people are busy using both hands.   • In Ban Phan Luang, across the Nam Khan River from Luang Prabang, Laos. Every morning at dawn, Buddhist monks walk down the streets collecting food alms from devout, kneeling Buddhists. In neighborhoods, after receiving food, they line up and chant a blessing towards the benefactor's house.They then return to their temples, or wats, and eat together. This procession is called Tak Bat, or Making Merit.

Fictional Representation and Caption: Interactive gravestones became quite popular in the 21st century. Adding snippets of video of the diseased was quite easy to program since nearly every family had extensively documented their family time with small digital videocams. AI (artificial intelligence) computer programs made conversations with the dead quite easy. These virtual visits to the underworld became passé within a decade however, and graveyard visits became less common. By mid-century many people wanted to insure that their relatives would continue paying their respects, and keeping their memory alive. New technology insured regular visits to the gravesite to pick up a monthly inheritance check issued electronically by a built-in device with wireless connection to the living relative's bank account. Face recognition (and retinal scanners on high-end models) insured that family members were present during the half-hour visits. A pressure pad at the foot of the grave activated the system and after 30 minutes of kneeling at the grave, watching videos or prerecorded messages or admonitions, a message flashed on the screen, indicating that a deposit had been made electronically to their bank account. For the Wright family of Napa, California, there is no other way to collect Uncle Eno's inheritance other than by monthly kneelings.   • Abdel Karim Aboubakar, a Sudanese refugee, with his day's worth of food in the Breidjing Refugee Camp in eastern Chad near the Sudanese border. (From the book What I Eat; Around the World in 60 Diets.) The caloric value of his day's worth of food on a typical day in the month of November was 2300 kcals. He is 16 years of age; 5 feet 9.5 inches tall; and 110 pounds. He escaped over the border from the volatile Darfur region of Sudan into eastern Chad with his mother and siblings, just ahead of the Janjawiid militia that were burning villages of ethnically black African Sudanese. Like thousands of other refugees, they were accepted into the camp program administrated by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Their meals are markedly similar to those they ate in their home country, there's just less of it. They eat a grain porridge called aiysh, with a thin soup flavored with a dried vegetable or sometimes a small chunk of dried meat if Abdel Karim's mother has been able to work in a villager's field for a day or two. They want to keep the snakes from spreading to other islands or the mainland USA. There are no birds on the Pacific Island of Guam thanks to the Brown Tree Snake. These hungry egg-eating snakes have overrun the tropical island after arriving on a lumber freighter from New Guinea during World War II. Besides wiping out the bird population, Brown Tree Snakes cause frequent power outages: they commit short circuit suicide when climbing between power lines.

  • At a senior center in the small city of Nago, Okinawa, elderly Japanese can spend the day in a setting reminiscent of a spa, taking footbaths, enjoying deep-water massage, and lunching with friends. With their caring, community-based nursing and assistance staff, Okinawan nursing homes and senior daycare centers, both public and private, seem wondrous places (vibrant and lively) where friends gather for foot massages, water volleyball, haircuts, or simple meals.
