Although such stores sell seal, musk ox, and other Arctic meats, most Greenlander families still obtain their meat from hunting. Hunting to feed the family is Emil Madsen's lifelong pursuit; taught to him by his father. Too fill his family's larder, Emil is often gone for a week or more. Not surprisingly, prices in the general store are high, but the Danish government heavily subsidizes Greenlanders' incomes to the tune of $6,786 per person in 1999, the latest year for which statistics are available.
